Negative attitudes regarding a student-athlete's academic ability exist in the collegiate environment in the form of the "dumb jock" stereotype (Baucom & Lantz, 2001; Bosworth, Fujita, Jensen, & Simons, 2007; Sailes, 1993; McHugh Engstrom & Sedlacek, 1991). These attitudes and stereotypical images hinder a student-athlete's academic achievement (Chomitz, Dawson, Slining, McGowan, & Mitchelll, 2009; Aries, Benaji, McCarthy, & Salovey, 2004; Morphew, Toma, & Wolf-Wendel, 2001). The author conducted a study at a public, NCAA Division II university whose student-athletes had a proven and publicized history of academic success. The study examined if perceptions of collegiate student-athletes were congruent with those negative feelings towards the group identified in the research. The setting was selected because of the university's unique history of proven levels of academic success within the student-athlete population. Results found that a positive perception felt by the student-athletes from the campus community was congruent with the high level of student athletes' academic achievement.

Self-perception is the level of competency at which individuals evaluate themselves in certain areas or domains (Marsh & Shavelson, 1985). An individual's self-perceptions contribute to their global self-worth, and even predict performance (Cuellar, 2014; Harter & Neemann, 2012). Self-perception is an increasingly popular area of study, and there is a gap in the research as it pertains to college student-athletes (Harter & Neemann, 2012). This study measures self- perception scores, as well as experiences with racial discrimination, of 306 NCAA Division I student-athletes using the Self-Perception Profile for College Students (Harter & Neemann, 2012). Scores are compared across race/ethnicity and gender. Findings suggest that White student-athletes have significantly higher self-perception scores than racial minorities, and recent discrimination (discrimination experiences within the last year) is a significant predictor of multiple areas of self-perception. Results also indicate significant gender differences exist in several areas of self-perception. The implications of this study prompt faculty, and other campus stakeholders to pursue positive relationships with the student-athletes they encounter. Positive relationships between student-athletes and faculty can help raise student-athlete self-perceptions, and in turn, performance in a variety of areas.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify the key factors student-athletes perceived to be important in their decision-making to stay in school. To accomplish this purpose, it was necessary to: 1) construct a conceptual model of student-athlete retention based upon the literature associated with traditional student retention and the college student-athlete experience, 2) utilize the conceptual model of student-athlete retention to guide the creation of an instrument that captures student-athlete perceptions of factors important to the retention process, and 3) use exploratory factor analysis to extract meaningful factors underlying the items of the instrument. Participants in this study consisted of 330 NCAA Division I student-athletes attending a large west coast university. Using the Understanding College Student-Athlete Retention Questionnaire developed for this study, data were collected in person during a team meeting for each participating sport. A total of 42 items, one question regarding intent to leave, and 17 demographic questions were included in the questionnaire. The Likert-scaled items were measured on a six-point scale ranging from Not Important (1) to Very Important (6) with the Importance scale referring to how important each statement is to the participant's decision to stay in school. Principal components analysis with VARIMAX rotation extracted a four-factor model. Cronbach's alpha and split-half (Spearman-Brown) reliability coefficients were calculated for the instrument and for each extracted factor. The questionnaire had a reliability coefficient of .930, whereas each factor had a reliability coefficient greater than or equal to .784. Forty-one of the 42 items included in the questionnaire loaded onto one of four factors: Quality of Academic Experience, Quality of Athletic Experience, In-Network Support, and Out-Of-Network Support. These four factors reflect what student-athletes perceived to be important to the student-athlete retention process. Factor scores were also calculated for each factor based on intent to leave. Results indicated that respondents who did not have intentions of leaving school early placed a significantly higher level of importance on the Quality of Academic Experience, whereas respondents who did have intentions of leaving school early placed a significantly higher level of importance on the Quality of Athletic Experience.

During the 2004-05 school year, over 10,000 international student-athletes competed for National Collegiate Athletic Association schools (NCAA, 2006b). Few researchers have examined how international student-athletes' college experiences compare to domestic student-athletes. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to adaptation to college, (b) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to their view of the purpose of college sports, and (c) to determine whether student-athletes' views on the purpose of college sport help predict social adjustment to college or institutional attachment. A national sample of international and domestic student-athletes from 11 NCAA Division I institutions completed an instrument comprised of the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales from the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (Baker and Siryk, 1989) and the seven factor scales from a modified version of the Purpose of Sport Questionnaire developed by Duda (1989). A total of 288 student-athletes completed the instrument, 174 of whom were international student-athletes representing 49 different countries. Results showed international student-athletes scored significantly lower on the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales compared to domestic studentathletes. Among the seven purpose of sport factors, only the factor of competitiveness revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, with international student-athletes ranking the factor lower than domestic student-athletes. None of the purpose of sport factors significantly predicted social adjustment to college for either domestic or international student-athletes. Several purpose of sport factors significantly predicted institutional attachment, however. A discussion of results and their implications are outlined.

Student Athletes Perceptions Of Their Academic And Athletic Roles written by Michelle L. Mahoney and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with College athletes categories.

Student-athletes' academic and athletic roles both require commitment, time, energy, and effort. Managing and balancing these multiple roles not only impacts student-athletes' use of time, but also their overall college experience. The purpose of this study was to explore how collegiate student-athletes perceive their academic and athletic roles. This study gives voice to student-athletes' perceptions of their multiple roles, provides insight on how they navigate these roles, and examines the intersections between athletic role, academic motivation, choice of major, and career decision-making processes. Qualitative interviews were conducted employing the constant comparative analytic method as a means to gain a meaningful understanding of how student-athletes perceive and experience their multiple roles. The study sample contained 18 (eight female and 10 male) student-athletes at Sunny Hills University (shu), a large 4-year public university in Southern California. A purposeful sample technique was employed resulting in participants being either sophomore, junior, or seniors on the following shu teams: Baseball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Golf, Women's Golf, Men's Outdoor Track, and Women's Outdoor Track. Five overarching themes emerged from the data regarding how student-athletes perceive their academic and athletic roles: (1) Two interconnected roles; (2) Part of an elite group; (3) Athletic role is more reinforced than academic role; (4) Sensitivity to stereotypes; and (5) Career decisions: a backseat to athletics. Implications for developing a theoretical or conceptual understanding of how Role Theory and in particular role conflict, affects student-athlete and how participants' viewed their academic and athletic roles as interconnected are also highlighted. Recommendations are provided for the ncaa, academic counselors, Athletic Departments, coaches, and faculty members with the goal of encouraging these different constituencies to understand areas where their behaviors could change in order to assist student-athletes with managing the multiple responsibilities, demands, and expectations of their role. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between college adjustment, self-efficacy, academic buoyancy and academic motivation among student-athletes of color at a predominantly White institution (PWI) that participate in Division I sports. Historically, institutions of higher education, founded by White male educators and businessmen, designed their schools primarily for White students. Students of color where not permitted to attend such institutions nor compete against them athletically. After the integration of schools, college administrators and coaches saw the opportunity to recruit student-athletes of color in an effort to create winning teams, fill stadium seats, and to generate revenue. Some PWI campuses were not as welcoming to student-athletes of color because they lacked diversity, some did not foster a welcoming racial or cultural atmosphere, and many were not as inclusive. Some athletes faced discrimination and racism on campus which may have been a factor in their academic motivation. This study examined the perception student-athletes of color have of their non-cognitive factors (i.e. college adjustment, self-efficacy, and academic buoyancy), athletic status, and race and how it influenced their motivation (i.e. intrinsic or extrinsic) toward academics. Twenty-eight Division I student-athletes of color at a large PWI public university participated in the study. Each athlete completed a 20-minute Likert-type survey that asked questions about their college experience, perception of adjustment, self-efficacy, academic buoyancy, and motivation toward academics. The results of the study found college adjustment, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation toward academics to relate among student-athletes of color. No significant relation was found between the three variables of self-efficacy, academic buoyancy and overall academic motivation as hypothesized by the researcher.

Research has focused on different aspects of a student-athlete's academic career, including their motivation, their successes and failures, and the different stereotypes placed on student athletes. This project addresses negative stereotypes and perceptions about student-athletes and argues that students place more internal attributions on student-athletes based on their communication behaviors in the classroom. The Situation Attitude Scale (SAS) surveyed students at a Southeastern University to indicate what communicative behaviors have an impact on perceptions and attributions. The results indicated that there was some significance between behaviors and attributions, such that students were more likely to make perceptions of student athletes when more passive behaviors were used. Results also indicated that there was significance between ethnicity and the type of attribution made. Clear results were limited due to the lack of specific measurements identifying which communication behaviors had more influence on students when making an attribution about a student athlete.
