Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Market research, grade: 3.5, Mälardalen University (School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology), course: MS International Marketing, language: English, abstract: The topic of this dissertation comes from these two areas: internationalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and international entrepreneurship. When looking into SMEs internationalization research, there is lack of material about pre-internationalization stage of SMEs. It is also very critical that firms should have theoretical guidelines to follow in early internationalization stage when they have no or very little international experience. SMEs are well known for their innovative and risk taking approach. This study aims at providing them with a strategic framework or method to analyze the marketability of their products or services and exploit internationalization opportunities. It also focuses on helping them in reducing their risks linked with cross border business opportunities. This research is performed through case study method. A new conceptual model has been developed by integrating relevant standard approaches within the field of research. This model has been further explained by implementing it on case company. Internationalization of SMEs in general has become a very famous topic in the world. This is the area which is developing further at present. Plenty of research has been performed from different perspectives and angles. International Entrepreneurship is an emerging area when it is yet struggling for standard definition. International entrepreneurship theory and SMEs are very much connected areas. While making a study related to internationalization of SMEs, we cannot neglect the importance of entrepreneurs, which is widely recognized as the main variables in SMEs' internationalization. Developing theoretical and conceptual model by integrating different existing theories is very usual in SMEs' internationalization research area. This may be due the reason that there is lack of standard theories or approaches in this area so there is an absolute need for such efforts. Motivated by similar drive authors aimed to create customized theoretical framework for analysis with the help of different standard approaches in the field.

Internationalization is a strategic issue for companies as it is today the central axis for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Market expansion and the growing importance of emerging markets offer new development opportunities for SMEs to use innovative strategies - such as head-deck strategies - to effectively penetrate these markets. This book focuses on understanding these new strategies. Why do SMEs use head-of-bridge strategies in order to internationalize? How do they deploy such strategies abroad? Based on the example of five manufacturing SMEs, which are at different stages of internationalization, this book highlights the main motivations, stages of deployment but also difficulties encountered in this direction. This book is a tool for assessing potential locations and provide managers with a new alternative in terms of internationalization, enabling rapid identification of key stakeholders, adapting their international development plan and anticipating potential pitfalls.

The majority of SMEs are operating in a networked business environment, and these networks extend beyond national and cultural boundaries. Within these networks, growth takes various routes and forms. Instead of linear, positive growth, international growth is often more cyclical, including periods of stagnation and withdrawal, even exits. International Growth of Small and Medium Enterprises focuses on international growth, such as how companies expand their operations across national borders through opportunity exploration and exploitation, and identification and development of innovations, i.e. on international entrepreneurship. The book provides a comprehensive overview of international growth of small and medium-sized enterprises from diverse points of view. It verifies that SMEs in all parts of the globe share similar characteristics, but also differ significantly. New explanations emerge, such as ownership, steering of the company, or the negative consequences of international growth. It discusses how the changing external environment of SMEs pushes them to create innovative solutions in order to survive and succeed. This collection of new and international perspectives sheds much-needed light on how founders and management teams of SMEs can succeed in fostering the growth process, and what specific characteristics are instrumental in initiating and maintaining international growth.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Trier, language: English, abstract: Field of study: International Business/International Entrepreneurship Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: Definitions, Economic Functions and Determinants of Internationalisation This study investigates a number of motives stimulating the internationalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).The internationalisation of SMEs usually is not part of a strategy but a reaction to a stimulus. An internationalisation stimulus is a factor fostering a firm's decision to start or maintain committing some resources to act on an international basis. The reaction to stimuli is an indicator for the flexibility of SMEs. It is an interesting point that flexibility helps small firms to overcome the lack of financial resources and is their advantage with regard to internationalisation. After dealing with different definitions of "small" and "medium" with regard to enterprize size and evaluating on the economic functions of smaller firms this work explains the ten following internationalization stimuli: - Potential for extra growth/sales/profit - Production of goods with unique qualities - Influence of decision maker - Orders from abroad - Saturation/shrinkage in domestic market - Intense competition of domestic market - Networking - Fulfilling an international need - Limitation of trade barriers - Global trade infrastructure

This edited volume develops an understanding of the strategies, processes, issues and concerns involved when small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) go international with their local products/services and vice versa. It is a compendium of eighteen selected chapters on the subject, supported by an introductory chapter. The contributions are organized in four parts based on the sub-themes they deal with. The first part, containing the introductory chapter, provides different perspectives on transnational entrepreneurship, returnee entrepreneurship and their linkages with the internationalization process. The subsequent parts have chapters dealing with three sub-themes of the subject – the internal factors (individual and firm-level resources), the external factors (entrepreneurial ecosystem), and the process of organizational transformation and change, respectively, in the context of SME internationalization. Special issues and challenges being faced by SME entrepreneurs in emerging economies have been highlighted in this book, discussing key contemporary issues with regard to internationalization in the three dimensions outlined above. Further, the book explains how an entrepreneur can engineer the transformation of his/her organization into an international SME. This book is a very useful resource for entrepreneurs and policy-makers in general, and for academics and researchers in particular, as it provides an overview of the contemporary research in the critical areas of SME internationalization and transnational entrepreneurship by highlighting the linkages between them with special reference to emerging economies.

Nowadays, globalization as well as the successive economic, political and health crises have changed the rules of the game in terms of competitiveness for companies. In this context, SMEs perhaps more than others are forced to face several upheavals to secure their activities and guarantee their survival. While SMEs have well-known weaknesses linked to their resources, they also have many assets that enable them to constantly renew themselves. Flexibility, responsiveness and resilience are therefore the watchwords to create new opportunities to grow, innovate, and position themselves on international markets. But how do they call into question the dynamics, approaches, and strategies for evolving in the international market? What role does innovation play in pursuing these changes? Through this collective and multidisciplinary book, we confront the point of view of management scientists, engineers and practitioners, to provide a rich and complementary multifaceted insight into innovation and internationalization in SMEs. We thus highlight key success factors favoring the emergence of new strategies, dynamics and value-creating opportunities.

With the globalization process, firms are seeking to expand their activities to international markets but are also “feeling” expanded competition from abroad. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), though seeking to expand abroad, have particularities that hinder their natural international expansion path due to particular barriers and challenges that most multinational firms have already overcome. Cases on Internationalization Challenges for SMEs provides a set of case studies on the internationalization of SMEs in order to share the latest empirical research findings in the field of internationalization in the context of a globalized world, and which considers a highly competitive international business setting. This includes examining the main reasons for the success or failure of the process of internationalization of SMEs and their inherent activities. Covering topics that include competitive advantage, export performance, and inward internationalization, this book targets managers, executives, and entrepreneurs concerned with how to adapt their companies to a fast-changing international business environment, how to conduct internationalization strategies, how to choose the most adequate international entry modes, and how to adapt their products and strategies to international markets. It is also suited for academicians, researchers, and students in the field of management.
