This edited volume deals with Management in South-East Asia. It widely agreed that this is a region of growing importance economically in today’s globalized world. This area contains a diverse range of dynamic economies, ranging from the ‘highly developed’ through to the ‘newly emerging’, each competing in a different manner and with different characteristics. This book specifically focuses on current and future developments in areas such as Business Culture, Enterprises and Human Resources. It covers a range of topics, industries, size of firms and countries (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, three of which are capitalist economies, with the latter a transitional communist one). These locations also comprehend a variety of business cultures, with a variety of religious values, ranging from Buddhist to Islamic, and ethnic identities. The approach taken is inter-disciplinary and most of the contributions are by locally-based authors who are very well qualified to write about their chosen country-setting. The experts contributing include those specialized in banking, business management, economics, finance, sociology, psychology and so on, all based in business schools and universities, encompassing a good number of national origins. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Asian Pacific Business Review.

The doctoral thesis investigates various strategies in the area of going and being international of retail firms which is of undisputable relevance due to the fairly narrow research status and the increasing internationalization of retail activities. Issues are investigated concerning the choice of retail market entry modes, i.e., the form of institutional arrangements that retailers use when entering foreign markets, the retail format transfer, i.e., the management of internal processes and the external marketing program elements and the coordination of retail activities, i.e., the implementation of the marketing program by the organizational structure. Regarding this, three important research questions are addressed:1) How do choose retailers their market entry mode in the area of conflict between full and shared-controlled modes and how is this decision influenced by the internal and external environment? 2) How can international retailers transfer their retail format successfully to foreign countries by standardizing or adapting the internal and external elements of their retail format? 3) How can retailers successfully coordinate the implementation of their retail marketing program to culturally diversified markets? These questions are investigated on the basis of established theories applied from the international management literature such as institutional theory, the resource-based view and the profit maximization theory. On the basis of comprehensive primary and secondary datasets, important implications are drawn for research and practice.

This book systematizes the concepts of business relationships and network embeddedness, taking a new approach to internationalization, relevant for the global economy. It reflects the growing importance of network internationalization theory and explores the impact of embeddedness in domestic and foreign relationships on a company’s performance. The author questions the validity of the distinction between domestic and foreign activity of companies and demonstrates that in the B2B market, there are actually no exclusively domestic companies which are not directly or indirectly connected with foreign entities. Chapters cover both small to medium sized enterprises and large multinational corporations, presenting a qualitative analysis of over 400 companies including case studies from the IT and furniture industries. This informative study will provide useful insight for academics and students of business and management, international business and organization studies.

International Growth Of Small And Medium Enterprises written by Niina Nummela and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-04 with Business & Economics categories.

The majority of SMEs are operating in a networked business environment, and these networks extend beyond national and cultural boundaries. Within these networks, growth takes various routes and forms. Instead of linear, positive growth, international growth is often more cyclical, including periods of stagnation and withdrawal, even exits. International Growth of Small and Medium Enterprises focuses on international growth, such as how companies expand their operations across national borders through opportunity exploration and exploitation, and identification and development of innovations, i.e. on international entrepreneurship. The book provides a comprehensive overview of international growth of small and medium-sized enterprises from diverse points of view. It verifies that SMEs in all parts of the globe share similar characteristics, but also differ significantly. New explanations emerge, such as ownership, steering of the company, or the negative consequences of international growth. It discusses how the changing external environment of SMEs pushes them to create innovative solutions in order to survive and succeed. This collection of new and international perspectives sheds much-needed light on how founders and management teams of SMEs can succeed in fostering the growth process, and what specific characteristics are instrumental in initiating and maintaining international growth.
