Durch Vorlage von Jahresabschlüssen der Vorjahre, ergänzt durch aktuelle Zahlen, wurde das Risiko des Kredits eingestuft. Durch die Neuregelung der Eigenkapitalausstattung für Banken durch den Baseler Ausschuss für Bankenaufsicht (Basel II) rückt die Zukunftsfähigkeit des Unternehmens stärker ins Blickfeld. Dazu gehören beispielsweise die Unternehmensstrategie, die Managementqualität, die Innovationskraft oder das Marktumfeld, die sich nicht aus den Bilanzen ablesen lassen. Bei Ratings werden solche qualitativen Fakten mit quantitativen Daten verknüpft. Dadurch entsteht eine ganzheitliche Gesamtsicht auf das Unternehmen, die nicht nur die Verhältnisse des Unternehmens, sondern auch z.B. das Marktumfeld bewertet. Doch die Ratings werden bzw. wurden speziell durch den deutschen Mittelstand mit Skepsis betrachtet. Die Angst geht (bzw. ging) um, Ratings könnten den enorm wichtigen Weg der Kreditfinanzierung für klein- und mittelgroße Unternehmen (KMU) blockieren. Bei der Finanzierung von Mittelstandsinvestitionen kommt Bankkrediten eine überragende Bedeutung zu. 27,5 Prozent der Unternehmen halten Kredite für unverzichtbar, weitere 33,9 Prozent für sehr wichtig. Vor allem bei Kleinstunternehmen mit einer Zahl von 1 bis 4 Mitarbeitern und einem Umsatz von unter 250.000 Euro, deren Zahl zwischen 2001 und 2005 von 45,7 auf 48,6 Prozent gestiegen ist, ist (bzw. war) die Sorge groß. Hat der Mittelstand Sorgen, ist die Gefahr der Ausbreitung auf die gesamte Wirtschaft groß. Schließlich repräsentieren die rund 4 Millionen selbständigen Mittelständler in Deutschland 2005 über 70 Prozent aller Arbeitsplätze und 82 Prozent aller Lehrstellen. Knapp 49

Jahre vor dem Inkrafttreten der neuen Basler Eigenkapitalvorschriften müssen die Unternehmen vor Erhalt eines Kredites Zahlen und Fakten über ihre Kapitaldienstfähigkeit offen legen. Unternehmen die dies nicht oder wenig überzeugend tun, müssen mit höheren Fremdkapitalkosten oder gar einer Ablehnung ihres Kreditwunsches rechnen. Für Mittelständische Unternehmen ist es deshalb entscheidend, sich frühzeitig und gründlich auf Basel II vorzubereiten.
