"Internet and Gender in Kazakhstan offers an empirically rich and theoretically compelling analysis of how the Internet is influencing societal attitudes towards women's roles and agency in Kazakhstan. Equipped with intimate perspectives from the wider public in five different regions of Kazakhstan, the book conceptualises, theorises and analyses the relationship between the Internet and gender-related attitudes in Kazakhstan through a decolonial feminist lens. The author argues that digital communication technologies' effect on societal attitudes towards gender roles and norms in Kazakhstan is conditional on Internet and social media penetration rates, state-led digital censorship, and the ways in which local activists and conservative bloggers use their online presence. The recent growth of the Internet and access to competing narratives with regard to gender roles and family values in Kazakhstan make the country an ideal case study for exploring how digital communication technologies influence societal attitudes towards women's roles and agency in countries that are neither fully traditional nor fully modern. The book will be of interest to policy makers and researchers in the field of media studies, gender studies, in particular women's rights, LGBTQ+, feminist activism and gender-based violence, and Central Asian Studies"--

The use of social media and blogging websites has become more prevalent especially among young women; this trend suggests that gender has the potential to coincide with one’s actions and engagement online. Despite this notable trend, there is still a dearth of research on how women use the internet and how it affects their health, families, and interpersonal relationships. Gender Considerations in Online Consumption Behavior and Internet Use considers the use of online technologies through the lens of gender. From blogs dedicated to motherhood and infertility, to the Movember men’s health movement, gender identity is expressed in a communitive way online. This book provides empirical evidence on gender-specific internet usage and the feminine online experience. It is a valuable resource for students, academicians, researchers, technology developers, and government officials.

Central Asian post-independence media and communication industries, professional practices, education, persisting and evolving values, and traditions remain critically understudied with a notable scarcity of research and scholarly publications on the complex and increasingly changing communicative ecology landscape of this region. Mapping the Media and Communication Landscape of Central Asia: An Anthology of Emerging and Contemporary Issues addresses this gap in literature by exploring, analyzing, and shedding light to the field, practice, research and critical inquiry of media and mass communication in four countries in Central Asia—Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. This book includes local authors as well as new and emerging researchers from this region to contextualize the issues explored and provide a supportive dialogue between different points of view.

Today, roughly 2 billion people use the internet, and its applications have flourished in number and importance. This volume will examine the growth and geography of the internet from a political economy perspective. Its central motivation is to illustrate that cyberspace does not exist in some aspatial void, but is deeply rooted in national and local political and cultural contexts. Toward that end, it will invoke a few major theorists of cyberspace, but apply their perspectives in terms that are accessible to readers with no familiarity with them. Beyond summaries of the infrastructure that makes the internet possible and global distributions of users, it delves into issues such as the digital divide to emphasize the inequalities that accompany the growth of cyberspace. It also addresses internet censorship, e-commerce, and e-government, issues that have received remarkably little scholarly attention, particularly from a spatial perspective. Throughout, it demonstrates that in cyberspace, place matters, so that no comprehensive understanding of the internet can be achieved without considering how it is embedded within, and in turn changes, local institutional and political contexts. Thus the book rebuts simplistic “death of distance” views or those that assert there is, or can be, a “one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter” model of the internet applicable to all times and places.

Gendering Post Soviet Space written by Tatiana Karabchuk and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-01 with Business & Economics categories.

This volume combines approaches from three disciplines – economics, sociology, and demography – and empirically analyzes the key aspects of the labor market and social demography processes in post-Soviet transitional societies while focusing on the gender perspective. Here, readers will find empirical studies on such countries as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The volume contributes to the literature by addressing the lack of academic empirical research on gender difference issues in the labor markets of post-Soviet countries as well as gender inequalities in fertility preferences, gender disparities among the youth and elderly, the gender pay gap, gender differences in employment, and female voices. The book brings together researchers of different disciplines from a variety of countries, distinguishing this project as international and interdisciplinary. The authors use the quantitative survey micro-data approach as well as the qualitative methods of interview data analysis to provide a comprehensive and detailed overview of the economic and social developments in the region regarding gender differences. The volume consists of three parts tackling the following topics: 1) gender differences and demography (family formation and fertility, youth and elderly employment); 2) gender differences and labor market (gender wage gap, motherhood wage penalty, gender differences among freelancers, and women in STEM science); and 3) gender differences, well-being, and gender equality attitudes (women’s voices, women’s collective actions, gender equality attitudes, and spending patterns of housewives).
