Egal, ob Telefon, Handy oder Internet, alle diese neuen Kommunikationsmitteln ermöglichen uns, Menschen in Sekundenschnelle überall auf der Erde zu erreichen und mit ihnen zu kommunizieren. Bisher unüberwindbare Grenzen scheinen zu fallen. Das Internet bingt ungeahnte Möglichkeiten und Vorteile. Der Salzburger Weihbischof, Andreas Laun, listet in seinen Thesen zur ethischen Orientierung im virtuellen Raum folgende Vorteile auf:1 Das Internet kann der Freiheit dienen, Monopole können gebrochen werden und Stimmlosen kann zumindest eine schwache Stimme gegeben werden. Es ist kaum möglich, dass trotz allen Spitzelwesens das Internet in Zukunft von den Menschen ganzer Länder ferngehalten werden kann. Diktatoren wird es dadurch ungleich schwerer fallen, ihr Land von allen nicht dienlichen Ideologien zu säubern. Auch die Kirche bedient sich auf dem Sektor der Freiheit des Internets: Jeder Gläubige kann sich aus freien Stücken Enzykliken u.a. aus dem Netz holen und sich auf diese Art über die Lehre der Kirche informieren. Das WWW dient aber auch der Forschung und der Wissenschaft. Lehrende und Studenten haben Zugang zu Daten, die vorher nicht erreichbar waren. Jeder kann seine Arbeit ins Netz stellen und so publik werden, eine eventuelle Beschränkung durch Druckkosten fällt zumindest für den Autor weg. Das Internet der Kommunikation und übertrifft in gewissen Fällen sogar das Telefon, erstens aus Kostengründen und zweitens durch eine neue Art der Erreichbarkeit. Möglichkeiten der Zusammenarbeit werden möglich, die vorher nicht einmal denkbar waren. Neben all diesen Vorteilen und Möglichkeiten birgt das Cyberspace jedoch auch eine Unmenge von Risiken und Gefahren, vor allem im Bereich der Ethik und des richtigen Handelns. Auf diese soll im Folgenden näher eingegangen werden.
