Journalism Cultures In Sierra Leone written by Sarah Bomkapre Koroma and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-07 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book provides novel insights into the perspectives of journalists in Sierra Leone and on their work by examining their perceived journalistic values and the influences that shape them. It treats journalism as an occupational identity and as a community that works on the foundation of the sub-Saharan African philosophies that exalts communal values in every sphere of life. When journalists speak about their social function in society and values, they are sharing both their individual knowledge and experiences on their work. Therefore, journalistic values are never isolated ideologies, but exist within the contexts in which they practice. In this book, Sarah Bomkapre Koroma examines the perceptions of journalists on the societal influences that impact their work, ranging from individual, procedural, organizational, political, economic, and many more. Questions explored include: What journalism cultures exist in Sierra Leone? What effects do societal factors have on these journalistic cultures? How do journalists in Sierra Leone describe their roles? What epistemological underpinnings do they consider during practice? What ethical considerations do the journalists share?

Democratization And Human Security In Postwar Sierra Leone written by Joseph J. Bangura and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-29 with History categories.

This edited collection is the first book-length project to undertake a multidisciplinary study of democratization and human security in the post war nation of Sierra Leone. The overarching theme is there is synergy of democratization and human security which makes it imperative for the state to foster and enhance the realization of these concepts in postwar Sierra Leone. The book is divided into two broad thematic sections. The first section deals with democratization with a critical examination of the creation and instrumentality of institutions largely considered a necessity for democracy to take hold in a country. The second section delineates human security or the lack thereof in key areas of political, social and economic life. Though the book is specific to Sierra Leone, African countries and indeed countries transitioning to democracy around the world, scholars and practitioners of postwar or democratic transition studies would benefit from the concepts expounded in this collection.

Sierra Leone written by Katrina Manson and has been published by Bradt Travel Guides this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-08-08 with Travel categories.

Thoroughly updated by a resident journalist, this new fourth edition of Bradt’s Sierra Leone remains the only English-language guide dedicated to this unique West African destination, one of just three countries where the über-elusive pygmy hippo can be found. One of Africa’s last ‘hidden gems’, where coastal mountains and secluded beaches are the stuff of daydreams, Sierra Leone lives up to its nickname of ‘Sweet Salone’. This welcoming country offers much natural beauty and culture, yet remains unsullied by mass tourism. In many places, local people are happily surprised each time they get visitors, and strive to make your stay the best possible. The country continues to be one of West Africa’s best beach destinations and trekking zones, the latter thanks to varied topography and the presence of Mount Bintumani, the region’s highest peak. Then there’s Ma Dengn (a new beach music festival); sanctuaries for rescued chimpanzees; tours of traditional wooden-board homes of the Krio people, descendants of repatriated slaves; and the significance of the UNESCO site of Bunce Island, a former slave-trading fort, as a destination for heritage tourism. You can also visit the infamous diamond mines and rainforest-covered mountains; search some of the burgeoning ecotourist sites for those pygmy hippos, explore the transboundary ‘peace park’ of Gola Forest to track down the cave-dwelling picathartes birds; or simply relax on beach-blessed islands. The country has seen a heartening recovery since emerging from civil war and the subsequent Ebola outbreak. Following the COVID pandemic, there has been considerable investment in the tourism sector, which has resulted in a surge of new tour operators and hotels alongside improved roads connecting key towns – all of which is reflected in this fourth edition. Although the country’s devastating past still informs many aspects of daily life, Sierra Leone is proudly back on the tourism map for the discerning, adventurous, beach-loving, jungle-exploring, mountain-scaling traveller, volunteer or international worker – and all those curious of heart. Offering significantly more coverage than any other guide, Bradt’s Sierra Leone is the ideal travel companion to this up-and-coming African destination.

Social Media And Politics In Africa written by Maggie Dwyer and has been published by Zed Books Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-15 with Political Science categories.

The smartphone and social media have transformed Africa, allowing people across the continent to share ideas, organise, and participate in politics like never before. While both activists and governments alike have turned to social media as a new form of political mobilization, some African states have increasingly sought to clamp down on the technology, introducing restrictive laws or shutting down networks altogether. Drawing on over a dozen new empirical case studies – from Kenya to Somalia, South Africa to Tanzania – this collection explores how rapidly growing social media use is reshaping political engagement in Africa. But while social media has often been hailed as a liberating tool, the book demonstrates how it has often served to reinforce existing power dynamics, rather than challenge them. Featuring experts from a range of disciplines from across the continent, this collection is the first comprehensive overview of social media and politics in Africa. By examining the historical, political, and social context in which these media platforms are used, the book reveals the profound effects of cyber-activism, cyber-crime, state policing and surveillance on political participation.

Digital Activism In The Social Media Era written by Bruce Mutsvairo and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-12 with Social Science categories.

This book probes the vitality, potentiality and ability of new communication and technological changes to drive online-based civil action across Africa. In a continent booming with mobile innovation and a plethora of social networking sites, the Internet is considered a powerful platform used by pro-democracy activists to negotiate and sometimes push for reform-based political and social changes in Africa. The book discusses and theorizes digital activism within social and geo-political realms, analysing cases such as the #FeesMustFall and #BringBackOurGirls campaigns in South Africa and Nigeria respectively to question the extent to which they have changed the dynamics of digital activism in sub-Saharan Africa. Comparative case study reflections in eight African countries identify and critique digital concepts questioning what impact they have had on the civil society. Cases also explore the African LGBT community as a social movement while discussing opportunities and challenges faced by online activists fighting for LGBT equality. Finally, gender-based activists using digital tools to gain attention and facilitate social changes are also appraised.

Out Of War written by Mariane C. Ferme and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-10 with Social Science categories.

Out of War draws on Mariane C. Ferme’s three decades of ethnographic engagements to examine the physical and psychological aftereffects of the harms of Sierra Leone's civil war. Ferme analyzes the relationship between violence, trauma, and the political imagination, focusing on “war times”—the different qualities of temporality arising from war. She considers the persistence of precolonial and colonial figures of sovereignty re-elaborated in the context of war, and the circulation of rumors and neologisms that freeze in time collective anxieties linked to particular phases of the conflict (or “chronotopes”). Beyond the expected traumas of war, Ferme explores the breaks in the intergenerational transmission of farming and hunting techniques, and the lethal effects of remembering experienced traumas and forgetting local knowledge. In the context of massive population displacements and humanitarian interventions, this ethnography traces strategies of survival and material dwelling, and the juridical creation of new figures of victimhood, where colonial and postcolonial legacies are reinscribed in neoliberal projects of decentralization and individuation.
