There is an emergent movement of scientists and scholars working on somatic awareness, interoception and embodiment. This work cuts across studies of neurophysiology, somatic anthropology, contemplative practice, and mind-body medicine. Key questions include: How is body awareness cultivated? What role does interoception play for emotion and cognition in healthy adults and children as well as in different psychopathologies? What are the neurophysiological effects of this cultivation in practices such as Yoga, mindfulness meditation, Tai Chi and other embodied contemplative practices? What categories from other traditions might be useful as we explore embodiment? Does the cultivation of body awareness within contemplative practice offer a tool for coping with suffering from conditions, such as pain, addiction, and dysregulated emotion? This emergent field of research into somatic awareness and associated interoceptive processes, however, faces many obstacles. The principle obstacle lies in our 400-year Cartesian tradition that views sensory perception as epiphenomenal to cognition. The segregation of perception and cognition has enabled a broad program of cognitive science research, but may have also prevented researchers from developing paradigms for understanding how interoceptive awareness of sensations from inside the body influences cognition. The cognitive representation of interoceptive signals may play an active role in facilitating therapeutic transformation, e.g. by altering context in which cognitive appraisals of well-being occur. This topic has ramifications into disparate research fields: What is the role of interoceptive awareness in conscious presence? How do we distinguish between adaptive and maladaptive somatic awareness? How do we best measure somatic awareness? What are the consequences of dysregulated somatic/interoceptive awareness on cognition, emotion, and behavior? The complexity of these questions calls for the creative integration of perspectives and findings from related but often disparate research areas including clinical research, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, anthropology, religious/contemplative studies and philosophy.

This book provides a comprehensive overview and critical evaluation of the emerging and exciting topic of interoception – the perception of the body’s internal state. Interest in the topic has been driven by the observation that interoception appears to affect fundamental psychological processes and numerous physical and mental health conditions. In this book, the major authorities in the field present a discussion of the history of interoception, the neural basis of interoception, and the measurement and models of interoception conceptualization. This is followed by a consideration of the many domains that interoception appears to impact (including social and cognitive abilities and mental and physical health conditions) and differences across demographic groups. Interoception: A Comprehensive Guide also explores real world applications, including training for interoception, the modulation of interoception and the impact of such interventions, and future research directions.

Rising Above Lyme Disease is a comprehensive, whole-body approach to overcoming Lyme disease and reclaiming your life. Incidence of Lyme disease is skyrocketing. If caught early, antibiotics can often successfully treat it, but more often than not, Lyme is asymptomatic and evades diagnosis until it is a full-blown, chronic condition that requires a multi-faceted treatment plan. In Rising Above Lyme Disease, renowned naturopath and Lyme-literate doctor Julia Greenspan presents a Comprehensive and Alternative Medicine (CAM) approach for recovery for those who have been suffering with this disease for weeks, months, years, or even decades. Operating from the front lines of the epidemic in New England, she gives hope to those who thought there was none, or feel unheard by all those around them. Dr. Greenspan's integrative treatment plan addresses not only the body, but the mind as well, and includes: Standard protocols such as antibiotic and probiotic care, which can be essential to long-term healing (despite fears) Detoxing and dietary changes that help get proven results Therapies such as yoga, massage, earthing, and qi gong Therapies that dig deeper (when nothing else seems to be working) and focus on removing obstacles to healing, such as past trauma, negative beliefs about self, unhealthy lifestyle choices, genetics, hormone imbalance, environmental toxins, and other infections—all of which have a very real, and often overlooked, effect on recovery Through this comprehensive approach that focuses on the whole person and the very personal ways in which the disease may affect one's life, it is possible to find relief, become your best advocate, and ultimately, rise above Lyme.
