This volume is devoted to Joseph A. (Joe) Ball’s contributions to operator theory and its applications and in celebration of his seventieth birthday. Joe Ball’s career spans over four and a half decades, starting with his work on model theory and related topics for non-contractions and operators on multiply connected domains. Later on, more applied operator theory themes appeared in his work, involving factorization and interpolation for operator-valued functions, with extensive applications in system and control theory. He has worked on nonlinear control, time-varying systems and, more recently, on multidimensional systems and noncommutative H∞-theory on the unit ball and polydisk, and more general domains, and these are only the main themes in his vast oeuvre. Fourteen research papers constitute the core of this volume, written by mathematicians who have collaborated with Joe or have been influenced by his vast mathematical work. Through its rapid progress in the last decade, HOOcontrol became an established control technology to achieve desirable performances of con trol systems. Several highly developed software packages are now avail able to easily compute an HOOcontroller for anybody who wishes to use HOOcontrol. It is questionable, however, that theoretical implications of HOOcontrol are well understood by the majority of its users. It is true that HOOcontrol theory is harder to learn due to its intrinsic mathemat ical nature, and it may not be necessary for those who simply want to apply it to understand the whole body of the theory. In general, how ever, the more we understand the theory, the better we can use it. It is at least helpful for selecting the design options in reasonable ways to know the theoretical core of HOOcontrol. The question arises: What is the theoretical core of HOO control? I wonder whether the majority of control theorists can answer this ques tion with confidence. Some theorists may say that the interpolation theory is the true essence of HOOcontrol, whereas others may assert that unitary dilation is the fundamental underlying idea of HOOcontrol. The J spectral factorization is also well known as a framework of HOOcontrol. A substantial number of researchers may take differential game as the most salient feature of HOOcontrol, and others may assert that the Bounded Real Lemma is the most fundamental building block.

This volume is the first of the three volume publication containing the proceedings of the 1989 International Symposium on the Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems (MTNS-89), which was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 19-23, 1989. A knowledge of linear systems provides a firm foundation for the study of optimal control theory and many areas of system theory and signal processing. State-space techniques developed since the early sixties have been proved to be very effective. The main objective of this book is to present a brief and somewhat complete investigation on the theory of linear systems, with emphasis on these techniques, in both continuous-time and discrete-time settings, and to demonstrate an application to the study of elementary (linear and nonlinear) optimal control theory. An essential feature of the state-space approach is that both time-varying and time-invariant systems are treated systematically. When time-varying systems are considered, another important subject that depends very much on the state-space formulation is perhaps real-time filtering, prediction, and smoothing via the Kalman filter. This subject is treated in our monograph entitled "Kalman Filtering with Real-Time Applications" published in this Springer Series in Information Sciences (Volume 17). For time-invariant systems, the recent frequency domain approaches using the techniques of Adamjan, Arov, and Krein (also known as AAK), balanced realization, and oo H theory via Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation seem very promising, and this will be studied in our forthcoming monograph entitled "Mathematical Ap proach to Signal Processing and System Theory". The present elementary treatise on linear system theory should provide enough engineering and mathe of these two subjects.
