Excerpt from Interpretations of Life and Religion Hebrew songs strike at the roots Of things. The most recent of them were written at least twenty-four centuries ago, yet they are as fresh and vital as if they were penned yesterday. They are the utterances of men who were neither philosophers nor theologians nor saints; yet they lay bare the inmost springs Of life, they supply facts and experiences that are built into the foundation-walls Of Christian theology, they have been woven into the hymns and prayers Of nineteen centuries Of Christian history. The secret Of their vitality and power lies in the fact that they are frank, genuine words, wrung from men who glanced keenly into the depths and heights of their life, and discerned the eternal facts that formed the background from. Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Excerpt from The Meaning and the Method of Life: A Search for Religion in Biology The best method of reaching truth is that of a sym pathetic study of the facts before us - that is, by induc tion, and by a broad, careful, systematic inference, by making the light about us ever wider, and fearlessly at tacking the mystery beyond. Darkness and half-truths are thus progressively merged into light and larger truths, and the world of the known becomes ever greater and more satisfying. Let us renounce deduction, theories clutched out of the air, word-wars and logical juggling, and fix our minds to a perception of facts and a sym pathetic interpretation of them. Excerpt from Convent Life: The Meaning of a Religious Vocation The world shines bright for inexperienced eyes, And death seems distant to the gay and strong, And to the youthful heart proud fancies throng, And only present good can nature prize. How, then, shall youth o'er these low vapors rise And climb the upward path, so steep and long? And how, amid earth's sights and sounds of wrong, Walk with pure heart and face raised to the skies? By gazing on the Infinitely Good Whose love must quell or hallow every other, By living in he shadow of the Rood, For He that hangs there is our Elder Brother, Who, dying, gave to us Himself as food, And His own Mother as our nursing Mother. Excerpt from My Religion on Life Thoughts on God, on the Meaning of Life I have lived in the world for fifty-five years, and, with the exception of fourteen of fifteen years of my childhood, have passed thirty-five years as nihilist in the full sense of the word, that is, not as a socialist and revolutionist, as which this word is generally understood, but as a nihilist in the sense of an absence of every faith. Five years ago I came to believe in Christ's teaching, and my life suddenly became changed: I ceased desiring what I had wished before, and began to desire what I had not wished before. What formerly had seemed good to me, appeared bad, and what had seemed bad, appeared good. What took place with me was what takes place with a man who goes out on some business and suddenly decides on his way that he does not need that business, and returns home. And everything which was on the right is now on the left, and what was on the left is now on the right: the former desire - to be as far as possible away from the house - is now changed to a desire to be as close as possible to it. The direction of my life, my desires, became different: what was good and bad changed places. All this was due to the fact that I came to understand Christ's teaching differently from what I had understood it before. Excerpt from Social Religion: An Interpretation of Christianity in Terms of Modern Life While misery remains in the land; while men are condemned to underpay and overwork; while women are forced into prostitution, and children are compelled to labor, there will be need for a Social Religion. Boundless wealth is appalled by the squalor grovelling at its doors. Along the avenue rushes Twentieth Century Civilization snugly ensconced in a motor; in the adjacent alley. Terror, in the semblance of a wolf, hunts with lolling tongue and hungry whine. Such social injustice - hideous in a barbaric society, grotesque in the United States - constitutes one of the problems of Social Religion. The wretched gamble for pennies; the well-fed for forests, mines, dignities, offices. Ignorance and graft - twin shadows of degeneracy - stalk through every highway of the land. Excerpt from New Aspects of Life and Religion "If thou art base and earthly, then despair. Thou art but mortal as the brute that falls. Birds weave their nests, the lion finds a lair, Man builds his halls, - These are but coverts from earth's war and storm, Homes where our lesser lives take shape and breath; But, if no heavenly man has grown, what form Clothes thee at death? And when thy meed of penalty is o'er, And fire has burnt the dross, where gold is none, Shall separate life, but wasted heretofore, Still linger on? God fills all space; whatever doth offend From His unbounded Presence shall be spurned; Or deem'st thou He should garner tares, whose end Is to be burned? If thou wouldst see the Power that round thee sways, In whom all motion, thought, and life are cast, Know, that the pure, who travel heavenward ways, See God at last." Excerpt from Religion as Life IF one is to do justice to the breadth of human nature, he may not forget that there are always two questions to be asked concerning any of the phenomena of the world and of life: How did it come to be? What does it mean? The question of process, of mechanical explanation, and the question of meaning, of ideal interpreta tion. And men cannot help asking the second question as well as the first. As Watts says, endeavoring to put into words the constant thought back of all his own work as an artist: As long as humanity is humanity, man will yearn to ascend the heights that human footsteps may not tread, and will long to lift the veil that shrouds the enigma of being; and he will most prize the echo of this longing in even the incoherent expression of literature. Excerpt from The Meaning and Value of Life In treating the question of life's meaning and value, our aim is to press home on the individual consciousness the spiritual problems of the present day, and enlist the individuals co-operation in regard to them. This conception of our task has imposed certain limitations on our philosophical programme; but that within these limits there is still room for enlightenment should become apparent as the work proceeds. To some the first and more critical portion of the discussion may seem too long drawn-out. But the main - thesis the vindication of which brings with it as a possibility the re-establishing of life and the rebirth of culture - could not be convincingly developed until shown to be the only road to the goal. And to this end the critical treatment was indispensable. It is not an accessory, but an essential. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
