In March 1988, an international workshop on intersections without traffic signals was held at the Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany. The proceedings of this workshop were published by Springer 1). The workshop was performed in a very harmonious atmosphere, which stimulated the experts from different countries to communicate and exchange their ideas and experiences. The presentations and the written contributions documented the present state of technical solutions for design and engineering of unsi gnalized intersections both regarding scientific research and practical applications. Moreover, numerous unsolved problems were identified. Thus, the 1988 workshop stimulated new developments in the field of unsignalized inter sections in several countries. In the meantime, these investigations have lead to a remarkable progress. For example in Germany a new guideline for unsignalized cross intersections and T-junctions has been finished and is going to be introduced in 1991. New results on roundabout capacity have been worked out as well. Many particularly important developments were made in foreign countries. Especially in the United States, an increasing interest in this subject can be observed. In the annual meetings of the TRB, this item received great attention. Many research institutes in North America have concentrated their activities on that point. A new TRB-circular concerning unsignalized intersections is going to be published. It will contain a new procedure for four-way-stop-control intersections, which seems to be a special feature of North American traffic engineering. However, new results from the US for two-way-stop control intersections are available as well.

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide - Second Edition explores the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of roundabouts. The report also addresses issues that may be useful in helping to explain the trade-offs associated with roundabouts. This report updates the U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, based on experience gained in the United States since that guide was published in 2000.

Prediction of traffic (like weather forecast), its planning and control are counted among the great scientific and technological challenges. Similarly, flow of granular material like tablets or powders is of immense importance for industrial processing of solids. Both fields have intriguing conceptual analogies. From 9-11 October, 1995, the German Supercomputing Center HLRZ (Höchstleitungsrechenzentrum) at the research center Jülich (KFA) organized an international workshop 'Traffic and Granular Flow'. The purpose of this workshop was to promote the interaction between these two scientific fields, to which supercomputing is making essential contributions, and to stimulate the transfer between basic and applied research.

This book gathers the latest research, innovations, and applications in the field of civil engineering, as presented by leading national and international academics, researchers, engineers, and postgraduate students at the AWAM International Conference on Civil Engineering 2022 (AICCE’22), held in Penang, Malaysia on February 15-17, 2022. The book covers highly diverse topics in the main fields of civil engineering, including structural and earthquake engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, highway and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, and geomatic and construction management. In line with the conference theme, “Sustainability And Resiliency: Re-Engineering the Future”, which relates to the United Nations’ 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development, it highlights important elements in the planning and development stages to establish design standards beneficial to the environment and its surroundings. The contributions introduce numerousexciting ideas that spur novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaborations between various specialists in the field of civil engineering. This book is part of a 3-volume series of these conference proceedings, it represents Volume 3 in the series.

This book offers a collection of guidelines that will be particularly useful to those making decisions concerning roundabouts as safe and modern solutions in transport networks and systems. The decision-making support systems described here will interest those who face the challenge of finding solutions to problems concerning modern transport systems on a daily basis. Consequently, the book is chiefly intended for local authorities involved in planning and preparing development strategies for specific transport-related issues (in both urban and regional contexts), as well as for representatives of business and industry who are directly engaged in the implementation of traffic engineering solutions. The guidelines provided in the respective chapters help to address the given problem soundly, and to simplify the selection of an appropriate strategy. The topics covered include traffic conditions and the performance of single-lane, two-lane and turbo roundabouts, road traffic safety analysis, analysis of road traffic safety improvements, surrogate safety measures at roundabouts, analysis of pedestrian behavior at pedestrian crossings with public transport vehicles, methods for assessing vehicle motion trajectory at single-lane roundabouts using visual techniques, making compact two-lane roundabouts effective for vulnerable road users, concepts for wireless electric vehicle charging near roundabouts, work zones, and temporary traffic control at roundabouts. Since the book also considers new approaches to theoretical models (including modeling roundabout capacity, models of critical gaps and follow-up headways for turbo roundabouts, and estimating roundabout delay while taking into account pedestrian impact), it will also appeal to researchers and scientists studying these problems. The book gathers selected papers presented at the 15th Scientific and Technical Conference “Transport Systems. Theory and Practice”, organized by the Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering, Silesian University of Technology in Katowice, Poland on September 17–19, 2018.

Cycling Futures written by Regine Gerike and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-09 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Pointing the way to the future of research and development in relation to cycling as a mode of transport, this book investigates some of the significant recent developments in the technology, provision for, and take up of cycling in various parts of the world. Tensions at the heart of the nature of cycling remain: on the one hand cycling is frequently viewed as being a risky activity, while on the other hand it is seen as being a way of allowing populations to live healthier lives. Reviewing this dichotomy, the authors in this book consider the ways that cycling is planned and promoted. This is done partly in relation to these issues of risk and health, but also from the broader perspective of behavioural response to the changing nature of cycling. A section on methodologies is also included which outlines the current state-of-the art and points a way to future research.
