An analysis of divergent online news preferences of journalists and consumers and what this means for media and democracy in the digital age. The websites of major media organizations—CNN, USA Today, the Guardian, and others—provide the public with much of the online news they consume. But although a large proportion of the top stories these sites disseminate cover politics, international relations, and economics, users of these sites show a preference (as evidenced by the most viewed stories) for news about sports, crime, entertainment, and weather. In this book, Pablo Boczkowski and Eugenia Mitchelstein examine the divergence in preferences and consider its implications for the media industry and democratic life in the digital age. Drawing on analyses of more than 50,000 stories posted on twenty news sites in seven countries in North and South America and Western Europe, Boczkowski and Mitchelstein find that the gap in news preferences exists regardless of ideological orientation or national media culture, and that it is not affected by innovations in forms of storytelling, such as blogs and user-generated content on mainstream news sites. Drawing upon these findings, they explore the news gap's troubling consequences for the matrix that connects communication, technology, and politics in the digital age.

Los capítulos de este volumen monográfico parten de principios teóricos ampliamente extendidos en las últimas décadas, en relación a la enseñanza de la escritura, entendida como proceso que no concluye con la adquisición de técnicas básicas de alfabetización, sino que, muy por el contrario, se desarrolla de manera compleja en función del contexto de comunicación en el que se encuentre el sujeto. La educación superior y sus áreas disciplinares generan unos marcos y unas pautas de actividad escritora, cuyo dominio sólo puede aprenderse en las propias universidades, con la implicación del profesorado. Escritura a través del curriculum o escritura en las disciplinas son rótulos que ayudan a evidenciar el papel epistémico de la práctica escrita. Desde y gracias a ésta, el conocimiento se adquiere y se genera. Las primeras universidades en tomar conciencia de la necesidad de abordar la enseñanza de la escritura, no sólo para remediar el déficit de competencias básicas de algunos estudiantes, sino sobre todo para proporcionarles los modos específicos de leer y escribir, requeridos en cada una de las disciplinas, en grados y postgrados, fueron las anglosajonas. Hoy en día es también relevante el volumen de investigación que aportan especialistas procedentes de Latinoamérica y, aunque con relativo retraso, van apareciendo contribuciones en las universidades españolas, que subrayan la importancia de la escritura como eje vertebrador del aprendizaje, y se preguntan acerca de cómo contribuir a la formación del alumnado, con implicación de la institución y del propio colectivo de profesores. Recogemos aquí la experiencia de siete universidades de nuestro país. La investigación y las iniciativas docentes que han desarrollado son exponentes de lo que actualmente preocupa y, además, sirven como muestra de la responsabilidad que se está asumiendo al respecto.
