A América Latina, fortemente ligada ao mundo ocidental e bastante envolvida pelo processo de mundialização, apresenta múltiplas influências, que, no entanto, não uniformizam a silhueta das imensas cidades que ocupam seus espaços e aí se conjugam. Parece, no entanto, que se pode falar de um modelo urbano latino americano. Aceitase atualmente a ideia de que o modelo centro periferia, que se resumia à urbanização dos anos 1970 1990, fez surgir o que alguns especialistas das ciências sociais chamam de fragmentação urbana, enquanto outros preferem enfocar os fenômenos da segregação. Essas são algumas das ideias colocadas em prática por vários países e que cada cidade, à sua maneira e levando em conta suas singularidades, busca implementar. As reflexões propostas neste livro enfocam uma dezena de cidades de norte a sul, da Cidade do México a Buenos Aires e Santiago, passando por São Paulo e Rio de janeiro.
