Excerpt from Intervention in Mexico A professor is sometimes defined as a person who thinks otherwise. Not many years ago an eminent American statesman who was once a professor bade the people of Mexico Godspeed in gaining for and by themselves true political freedom, and pledged himself that, so far as he could prevent it, no one should interfere with them. Has the situation of our southern neighbor changed so materially since then, or are we thinking otherwise? There was a time in our history when civil war nearly rent the nation asunder. Luckily, we had all of our political troubles that had to be settled by fighting packed into four years. In this respect the only difference between Mexico and ourselves is that the fighting has been spread over most of a century. When the struggle was on in our own case we called it a war and made it conform somewhat to the Sherman definition. So have the Mexicans, only more so. Happily for us, in our great civil convulsion the foreigners, who lost their lives or property because of the destruction that accompanies warfare were few. Unhappily for Mexico, the number of such foreigners is considerable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Maximilian in Mexico, the Story of the French Intervention (1861-1867) For the first fifty years of its being the Republic of Mexico exhibited a spectacle full of sorrow to the friends of free institutions throughout the world, and, especially, to the numerous practical sympathisers to be found in England, who had been the first to hold out a helping hand to the young and struggling State, just emerging, crippled but courageous, from four hundred years of oppression under the yoke of Spain. So far from realising the high aspira tions which had been formed among their friends abroad, who looked for orderliness, mutual good-will and loyalty among the citizens of the new State enjoying a common cause, one language and one faith to bind them, the country was made the scene of the exploits of a succession of ambitious individuals, who, in search of riches or power for themselves and their numerous partisans, plunged the nation into a sea of furious internecine warfare. Many of the agitators patriots they were called when successful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Reconstructive Policy in Mexico The most important and promising movement of modern times for securing the welfare of the majority of mankind is the Socialistic. All previous existing systems, including the religious and the commercial, have failed owing to the revulsion of mankind since the time of Plato against the exploitation of the masses. Socialism alone has proved an adequate instrument for converting humanitarian theories into the hard metal of accomplished realities. The progressive efforts of the Socialists in Europe, the brilliant showing they have made in New Zealand, and the agitation throughout South America towards shaking off the remnants of the feudal yoke, are phenomena on which the gaze of the world is riveted today. Among such phenomena, the Mexican Revolution stands out prominently; and in spite of all the mantles with which Capitalism has endeavored to cloak it, the Mexican agitation shows more and more definite Socialistic tendencies, which are of tremendous importance to every South American country, and no less vital to the North American people, who; in their turn, will have to solve the same problems that are now being worked out in Mexico, notwithstanding the superior material progress of the northern hemisphere. Excerpt from The Conspiracy Against Mexico That there is a conspiracy against Mexico is plainly evident to all who even in a very superficial manner have studied the facts. The cry of Wall Street and its kept press is for intervention by the United States and subsequent annexation to this country. The American financial powers are unanimous in demanding that the unsettled state of affairs below the Rio Grande cea'se. Their representatives in Congress have voiced their opinions in no uncertain terms that intervention is necessary if American Big Business is to survive in Mexico. British oil and other interests are likewise of an opinion that United States troops must go into Mexico and clean up things so as to make it safe for Capital. The American oil octopus in Mexico has been plotting for some time and is still at it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Coming Mexico Because Mexico had enjoyed peace for a generation under the dictatorship, practically, of that strong man, it was as sumed the other leaders had lost the tendency to seize the power when an opportunity seemed to be given; and the masses had become so convinced that in tranquillity alone lay their true course, as to make it impossible for ambitious leaders, quarrelling amongst themselves, to draw about them the armed forces required to carry out their schemes. In fact, there was no probability of occasion arising to give excuse for civil strife. Should the people depart from the path of peace which Diaz had blazed so clearly for them, it was contended that the United States would intervene and possibly annex Mexico; for the large interests of American and European investors, as well as the safety of foreign residents gener ally, would make it necessary to do something of the sort. Excerpt from Mexico in Revolution The various articles in this volume were written, on my return from Mexico, for the New Fork Times, the Chicago Tribune and other important newspapers in the United States. When I began my articles, the revolution which finally overthrew Carranza had not yet triumphed and "the old man" was is still alive. Events moved rapidly while the articles were coming out. Carranza was assassinated and Obregon, with the militarist party, came into power. Works of the moment, these articles record my various impressions of the days during which they were written. They do not, in consequence, show the unity and homogeneity of a book written after the fact on events already complete in themselves and easily appreciable to the person observing them in perspective and as a whole. I might, of course, have remodeled these articles and reduced them to chapter form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
