Dialysis is a medical procedure which is performed in people with acute kidney failure or Stage 5 chronic kidney disease. In this procedure the excess solutes, toxins and water from the blood are removed externally. This is also known as renal replacement therapy. It can be permanent or temporary. It is generally temporary in cases where kidney transplantation is due. The procedure can be classified into three primary and two secondary types. Peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis and hemofiltration are the primary types, while intestinal dialysis and hemodiafiltration are the secondary types. Dialysis is initiated based on a number of acute and chronic indications. The presence of acidemia, fluid overload, uremia and electrolyte abnormality indicates the need for dialysis. There have been major advances both in terms of technology and clinical management of dialysis. This book traces the progress of interventional nephrology and highlights some of its key practices. The various sub-types of dialysis along with technological progress that have future implications are glanced at herein. This book is meant for students who are looking for an elaborate reference text on dialysis.

Principles Of Renal Medical Procedures written by Ioannis Griveas and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with MEDICAL categories.

The field of interventional nephrology needs to be viewed as a new road towards improving the diagnostic methods and the dialysis access care provided to chronic kidney disease patients across the world. The above issues remain a weak link in the training of young nephrologists and a major hurdle both in the planning and maintenance phase of renal replacement therapy, as well as in the accuracy and safety of diagnosing renal impairment causation. Traditionally, the procedural aspect of care has been left in many cases to surgeons and/or radiologists. The above facts lead in many cases to patient inconvenience and high health care cost. The aim of this book is not only learning the necessary skills to perform renal medical procedures, but for nephrologists to assume leadership roles in coordinating a team to provide the best possible care. Mostly, this book is focused on details and "secrets" that can make the results better than we expect. Introducing renal physicians to the insertion of tunneled lines, medical insertion of peritoneal catheters and kidney biopsies (native and transplant) from the nephrologist's view is a great need in renal society. The primary focus of this book is to generate interest and awareness of the scope of interventional nephrology. The nephrology community across the world needs to evaluate the available resources to discuss the role of various team members and strive to improve patient care. Editors' and authors experiences are exposed in the book, which tends to help the growth and progress of this subspecialty. The trend is also seen as a recruiting tool to train the nephrology workforce in the future.

The mission of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN) is to promote the proper application of new and existing procedures to improve the care of patients with kidney disease. The Society promotes education, research, public policy and clinical practice initiatives relating to diagnostic and interventional procedures. In an educational program a complete and up-to-date Curriculum is essential. The Residents, Fellows and Practicing Nephrologists rely on their mentors to train them in procedures necessary to provide successful dialysis access. However, since there are several ways to accomplish any goal, the trainees also need a Curriculum which summarizes literature to provide evidence regarding advantages and disadvantages of each technique. This Core Curriculum provides this summary for peritoneal dialysis catheter procedures, which are the sine qua non of a successful dialysis program. The Curriculum represents a collaborative effort from Interventional Nephrologists in a wide variety of practices, from Universities to Private Hospitals to Access Centers. Each author is a recognized expert in the particular procedure or technique that they present. In the Introduction, Dr. Salman and Dr. Asif describe how a successful peritoneal access program directly leads to a larger PD program. Drs. Ash and Agarwal summarize various catheter designs and data indicating relative success of each. They also provide an overview of placement techniques (surgical, laparoscopic, peritoneoscopic, fluoroscopic). They define criteria for normal function and malfunction of PD catheters. Dr. Henry describes the surgical (dissective) technique of catheter placement, which entails dissection of the layers of the anterior abdominal wall. Dr. Zibari provides a detailed description of the laparoscopic technique while Dr. Abreo and colleagues describe the fluoroscopic/dilator/splitsheath approach to PD catheter placement. Dr. Mishler describes the single-puncture peritoneoscopic procedure. Dr. Salman and Dr. Asif focus on complications associated with catheter insertion and describe the PD catheter removal technique. Finally, Dr. Schon and Dr. Wang provide define the proper CPT codes to be used for all PD catheter procedures. This Curriculum should be invaluable to all healthcare professionals performing peritoneal dialysis catheter procedures.
