Words Are Very Unnecessary written by Selen Ansen and has been published by Arter Yayınları this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-01 with Art categories.

Arter initiates a new publication series, Arter Background, to accompany exhibitions drawn from its collection, which holds more than 1,300 works of art as of 2019. This second book in the series accompanies the exhibition Words Are Very Unnecessary, a collection-based group exhibition that takes its title from the lyrics in the 1990 Depeche Mode song Enjoy the Silence. Curated by Selen Ansen, the exhibition revolves around the concepts of gesture, remains and trace. In the book, excerpts of texts selected around the ideas active in the curatorial process are complemented by new essays written specifically for this context. It thus features texts on themes associated with vain gestures, hands, quotidian movements, daily objects, remains, non-gestures, remnants, dust, gestures of destruction, gestures of apology and the act of writing, and commissioned essays by Sevinç Çalhanoğlu, Cemal Ener, and Nora Tataryan. Interest in Christa Wolf continues to grow. Her classics are being reprinted and new titles are appearing posthumously, becoming bestsellers, and being translated. Energetic scholarly debates engage well-known aesthetic and political issues that the public intellectual herself fore-fronted. This broad-ranging introduction to the author, her work and times builds upon and moves beyond such foundational interpretative frameworks by articulating the global relevance of Wolf’s oeuvre today, also for non-German readers. Thus, it brings East German culture alive to students, teachers, scholars and the general public by connecting the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the lived experiences of its citizens to nations and cultures around the world. The collection focuses on topical matters including the search for authenticity, agency, race, cosmopolitanism, gender, environmentalism, geopolitics, war, and memory debates, as well as movie adaptations and Wolf’s film work with DEFA, marketing, and international reception. Our contributions – by senior and emerging scholars from across the globe – emphasize Wolf’s position as an author of world literature and an important critical voice in the 21st century.

Bennewitz Goethe Faust written by David G. John and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-04-03 with Performing Arts categories.

Fritz Bennewitz (1926-1995) was the director-in-chief of East Germany's Weimar National Theatre. Extraordinary in his capacity for cultural and linguistic adjustment, he directed productions in twelve countries, always adapting shows to make them meaningful to local audiences. Notably, Bennewitz conducted stagings of Goethe's Faust in four different languages over a series of seven productions — three in pre-unification Weimar, one in the reunited Germany, and one each in New York, Manila, and Mumbai. The first comprehensive account of Bennewitz's remarkable career, Bennewitz, Goethe, Faust is also a pioneering study of intercultural interpretations of Faust. David G. John brings to light previously unknown archival materials — including annotated playbooks, correspondence, translations, videos, and reception information — as well as unpublished production photos from the stagings discussed in the book. Bennewitz, Goethe, Faust makes a cogent argument for this director's place alongside the twentieth century's greatest theatre innovators.

Staging The Third Reich written by Anson Rabinbach and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-08 with History categories.

A widely celebrated intellectual historian of twentieth-century Europe, Anson Rabinbach is one of the most important scholars of National Socialism working over the last forty years. This volume collects, for the first time, his pathbreaking work on Nazi culture, antifascism, and the after-effects of Nazism on postwar German and European culture. Historically detailed and theoretically sophisticated, his essays span the aesthetics of production, messianic and popular claims, the ethos that Nazism demanded of its adherents, the brilliant and sometimes successful efforts of antifascist intellectuals to counter Hitler’s rise, the most significant concepts to emerge out of the 1930s and 1940s for understanding European authoritarianism, the major controversies around Nazism that took place after the regime’s demise, the philosophical claims of postwar philosophers, sociologists and psychoanalysts—from Theodor Adorno to Hannah Arendt and from Alexander Kluge to Klaus Theweleit—and the role of Auschwitz in European history.

Many of the contributions address works which have not previously been the subject of scholarly analysis. The writers discussed include: Wolfgang Bauer, Thomas Bernhard, Elias Canetti, Peter Handke, Fritz Hochwälder, Elfriede Jelinek, Jakov Lind, Felix Mitterer, Hermann Nitsch, Gerhard Roth, Werner Schwab, Marlene Steeruwitz, Peter Turrini, and the film-maker, Wim Wenders. This collection, which includes photographs and an essay on the problems of translating, will be of particular interest to teachers, students and translators of German-language drama, as well as to a wider theatre-going public.
