This text is designed to provide a basic overview of the subject of family violence. Gelles and Cornell stress the need for an understanding of the operation and function of the entire family system before effective counseling and treatment can be applied. This volume examines all aspects of family violence including child and spouse abuse, sibling violence, adolescent maltreatment, parent abuse. Its focus is on physical violence with its central characteristics of malevolence and intent to harm. However, the nature of the intended harm -- physical pain and suffering -- is seen to be unique. This series of articles portrays the state of the art on family violence and abuse research, crystallizes the key interdisciplinary issues confronting family violence and abuse researchers, and suggests a research agenda for the coming years. Although the chapters cover a broad spectrum of issues and controversies in the areas of wife abuse, child abuse, the sexual abuse of children, and marital rape, a number of common themes and issues emerge. First, many chapters share the perspective that violence and abuse emerge from the nature of social arrangements. Second, even though many different forms of family violence and abuse are discussed, several chapters explore their commonalities and important etiological differences. A number of articles examine the common effects of victimization across various forms of family violence and abuse. A third common theme of the papers is an expansion of research efforts to groups other than victims of family violence and abuse, as there are chapters that examine the individual and social characteristics of male perpetrators of both wife abuse and child abuse as well as chapters that focus on the attitudes and behaviors of professional groups concerned with the treatment of victims of family violence and abuse. The volume shows great methodological diversity and attention to theoretical detail; the research presented reveals the possibility of a more comprehensive social science approach to the study of family violence and abuse. In work related to theory building, one chapter explains a number of findings in the child abuse and neglect literature using propositions derived from evolutionary biology; another paper distills propositions from several theoretical traditions. In conjunction with these efforts, several chapters report research designed to test competing propositions. Chapter references and research data are provided.

A review of the previous edition... 'An excellent guide to the broad range of family problems associated with family violence. It does a good job of showing how devastating and tragic family violence really is, as well as showing the emotional and physical trauma suffered by the victims' - Family Violence Bulletin Richard J Gelles' bestselling volume has been thoroughly updated and revised to provide this comprehensive new edition. Armed with the latest research in the field, Intimate Violence in Families explodes many of the conventional myths and controversies hindering understanding of family violence, and replaces them with the most current knowledge available. While focusing largely on physical abuse, the book also examines data on sexual abuse, emotional and psychological abuse, neglect and other forms of intimate victimization. The author discusses theories of intimate violence and contributing social factors, and explores major controversies in the study and treatment of family and intimate violence. Abuse occurring in all types of family relationships are covered: partners; children; siblings; parents; the elderly; and gay and lesbian couples.
