Apreciado lector, esto no es un libro de psicología. Es un libro de filosofía. Aunque trate de un tema muy estudiado por los psicólogos, no es propiamente un tratado de psicología; al menos en el sentido corriente de la psicología empírica. Es un libro de filosofía. Esto es, un estudio sobre las bases mismas y los fundamentos de la sensación y de la experiencia. La psicología convencional trata de los actos principalmente y de los comportamientos de las personas y los estudia generalmente en otras personas, distintas de la del investigador, a las cuales se pregunta o se hacen test o se somete a experimentos determinados, etc. Pero ahora tratamos de ir más allá de los actos y de los comportamientos; aunque sea dándolos por supuestos o remitiendo a los mismos según la propia experiencia reflexiva, tanto personal como de otras personas. Por tanto, no es que rechacemos la experiencia; al contrario, la damos como sabida o conocida suficientemente, teniendo en cuenta sus aportaciones para la descripción (fenomenológica) de los actos o comportamientos humanos de tipo cognoscitivo.
