Qu'est-ce qu'une ville ? Comment définir la ville aujourd'hui ? Telle est l'ambition de cet ouvrage de synthèse, qui vient déconstruire un certain nombre d'idées reçus sur le fait urbain. Les modèles scientifiques de ville couramment utilisés et enseignés sont en effet très déterminés par une représentation purement européenne de la ville, et souvent mythique. Cette ville-là doit être confrontée à des réalités non européennes qui permettent une analyse critique des termes et des méthodes les plus utilisés en géographie urbaine. La démonstration, fondée sur des travaux théoriques antérieurs (école de Chicago, travaux de Jacques Lévy, etc.) et sur l’idée qu’il est nécessaire de comparer pour conceptualiser (en convoquant l'anthropologie et l'histoire), permet à l’auteur de proposer aux étudiants une pratique de l’analyse critique des notions communément utilisées. Cette approche s’impose dès lors que la question urbaine sort du cadre exclusivement européen et s’intéresse à sa dimension mondiale. Elle permet tout à la fois une réflexion originale sur la ville, sur la construction des concepts en géographie et des modèles scientifiques en sciences humaines, sur la mondialisation culturelle à travers l'étude du fait urbain.
