Greimas et considérant les textes comme le résultat d'un dispositif structuré de règles et de relations, cet ouvrage propose une analyse qui se développe sur deux niveaux : le niveau de surface et le niveau profond (dit aussi immanent, ce qui signifie que la problématique définie par le travail sémiotique porte sur le fonctionnement textuel de la signification et non sur le rapport que le texte peut entretenir avec un référent externe). Au niveau profond, deux plans d'organisation sont aménagés pour agencer les éléments reconnus pertinents : un réseau de relations, qui effectue un classement des valeurs de sens selon les relations qu'elles entretiennent ; un système d'opérations, qui organise le passage d'une valeur à une autre.
