"This publication provides guidelines, and highlights the milestones to be achieved by radiotherapy departments in the safe and effective introduction of image guided radiotherapy. Recent advances in external beam radiotherapy include the technology to image the patient in the treatment position, in the treatment room at the time of treatment. Since this technology and associated image techniques, termed image guided radiotherapy, are perceived as the cutting-edge of development in the field of radiotherapy, this publication addresses the concerns of personnel in radiotherapy departments as to the preparatory conditions and resources involved in implementation. Information is also presented on the current status of the evidence supporting the use of image guided radiotherapy in terms of patient outcomes."--Publisher's description

Over the last 4 years, IMRT, IGRT, SBRT: Advances in the Treatment Planning and Delivery of Radiotherapy has become a standard reference in the field. During this time, however, significant progress in high-precision technologies for the planning and delivery of radiotherapy in cancer treatment has called for a second edition to include these new developments. Thoroughly updated and extended, this new edition offers a comprehensive guide and overview of these new technologies and the many clinical treatment programs that bring them into practical use. Advances in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and 4D and adaptive treatment planning are clearly presented. Target localization and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) systems are comprehensively reviewed as well. Clinical tutorials illustrate target definitions for the major cancer sites, and useful techniques for organ motion management are described and compared. There are also several chapters that explore the technical basis and latest clinical experience with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and summarize practical treatment recommendations. Furthermore, the significant and increasing contributions of proton therapy to cancer care are also highlighted, alongside the practical allocation of all these new technologies from an economic perspective. As a highlight of this volume, a number of images can be viewed online in time-elapse videos for greater clarity and more dynamic visualizationWritten by leading authorities in the field, this comprehensive volume brings clinical and technical practitioners of radiotherapy fully up to date with the key developments in equipment, technologies and treatment guidelines.

Clinical Insights For Image Guided Radiotherapy written by Mike Kirby and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-10 with Science categories.

This book provides a clinical insight into image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) for prostate cancer. It starts by setting the clinical scene, discussing immobilisation and standard IGRT practice and then considering important developments like IGRT with non-ionising radiation, adaptive radiotherapy, particle therapy, margins, hypofractionation, clinical outcomes, AI and training. Good IGRT requires both technical and clinical focus. So, in complement to our first study guide on IGRT, this book now brings together key, clinical insights into IGRT for Prostate Cancer patients, with a view to helping the professional learn more about ‘how-to’ undertake IGRT for these patients more accurately, effectively and safely, throughout the whole course of a patient’s treatment with radiation. This clinical insight guide will be of interest to newly qualified radiation therapists, therapeutic radiographers, medical dosimetrists, medical physicists, radiotherapy physicists and clinical oncologists. It will also be of use for trainees and can be used alongside continuing competency and clinical training within real clinical departments and radiation therapy centres worldwide. This is the first in a forthcoming series of clinical insights, each tackling a different treatment area. Further areas in the series will be: Head and Neck; Thorax; Breast; Pelvis; and the Brain. Key Features: • Internationally applicable, clinically focused, up-to-date and evidence based. · Accompanied by suitable electronic multimedia resources. · Authored by experts with decades of experience of pioneering electronic portal imaging and IGRT in clinical practice, pedagogic research and substantial experience of teaching/supervising students, trainees and qualified therapists/medical physicists at bachelors, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The fifth edition of this respected book encompasses all the advances and changes that have been made since it was last revised. It not only presents new ideas and information, it shifts its emphases to accurately reflect the inevitably changing perspectives in the field engendered by progress in the understanding of radiological physics. The rapid development of computing technology in the three decades since the publication of the fourth edition has enabled the equally rapid expansion of radiology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine and radiobiology. The understanding of these clinical disciplines is dependent on an appreciation of the underlying physics. The basic radiation physics of relevance to clinical oncology, radiology and nuclear medicine has undergone little change over the last 70 years, so much of the material in the introductory chapters retains the essential flavour of the fourth edition, updated as required. This book is written to help the practitioners in these fields understand the physical science, as well as to serve as a basic tool for physics students who intend working as medical radiation physicists in these clinical fields. It is the authors’ hope that students and practitioners alike will find the fifth edition of The Physics of Radiology lucid and straightforward.

On request, the IAEA performs comprehensive audits of radiotherapy programmes to assess the whole process, including aspects such as organization, infrastructure and clinical and medical physics components. The objective of a comprehensive clinical audit is to review and evaluate the quality of all components of the practice of radiotherapy at the institution, including its professional competence, with a view to quality improvement. A multidisciplinary team, known as Quality Assurance Team in Radiation Oncology (QUATRO), comprising a radiation oncologist. a medical physicist and a radiation therapist, are required to carry out the audit. The present publication provides revisions of the QUATRO guidelines published in 2007, by incorporating new procedures relevant to newer technologies and modalities that have become routinely used in radiotherapy centres in the interim period.
