Among the theoretical methods for solving many problems of applied mathematics, physics, and technology, asymptotic methods often provide results that lead to obtaining more effective algorithms of numerical evaluation. Presenting the mathematical methods of perturbation theory, Introduction to Asymptotic Methods reviews the most important m

Many branches of science and engineering involve applications of mathematical analysis. An important part of applied analysis is asymptotic approximation which is, therefore, an active area of research with new methods and publications being found constantly. This book gives an introduction to the subject sufficient for scientists and engineers to grasp the fundamental techniques, both those which have been known for some time and those which have been discovered more recently. The asymptotic approximation of both integrals and differential equations is discussed and the discussion includes hyperasymptotics as well as uniform asymptotics. There are many numerical examples to illustrate the relation between theory and practice. Exercises in the chapters enable the book to be used as a text for an introductory course.

This book gives introductory chapters on the classical basic and standard methods for asymptotic analysis, such as Watson's lemma, Laplace's method, the saddle point and steepest descent methods, stationary phase and Darboux's method. The methods, explained in great detail, will obtain asymptotic approximations of the well-known special functions of mathematical physics and probability theory. After these introductory chapters, the methods of uniform asymptotic analysis are described in which several parameters have influence on typical phenomena: turning points and transition points, coinciding saddle and singularities. In all these examples, the special functions are indicated that describe the peculiar behavior of the integrals. The text extensively covers the classical methods with an emphasis on how to obtain expansions, and how to use the results for numerical methods, in particular for approximating special functions. In this way, we work with a computational mind: how can we use certain expansions in numerical analysis and in computer programs, how can we compute coefficients, and so on.

From the reviews: "A good introduction to a subject important for its capacity to circumvent theoretical and practical obstacles, and therefore particularly prized in the applications of mathematics. The book presents a balanced view of the methods and their usefulness: integrals on the real line and in the complex plane which arise in different contexts, and solutions of differential equations not expressible as integrals. Murray includes both historical remarks and references to sources or other more complete treatments. More useful as a guide for self-study than as a reference work, it is accessible to any upperclass mathematics undergraduate. Some exercises and a short bibliography included. Even with E.T. Copson's Asymptotic Expansions or N.G. de Bruijn's Asymptotic Methods in Analysis (1958), any academic library would do well to have this excellent introduction." (S. This book is aimed at researchers and students in physics, mathematics, and engineering. It contains the first systematic presentation of a general approach to the integration of singularly perturbed differential equations describing nonuniform transitions, such as the occurrence of a boundary layer, discontinuities, boundary effects and so on. The method of regularization of singular perturbations presented here can be applied to the asymptotic integration of systems of ordinary and partial differential equations.

Radiative Transfer written by Hélène Frisch and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-26 with Science categories.

This book discusses analytic and asymptotic methods relevant to radiative transfer in dilute media, such as stellar and planetary atmospheres. Several methods, providing exact expressions for the radiation field in a semi-infinite atmosphere, are described in detail and applied to unpolarized and polarized continuous spectra and spectral lines. Among these methods, the Wiener–Hopf method, introduced in 1931 for a stellar atmospheric problem, is used today in fields such as solid mechanics, diffraction theory, or mathematical finance. Asymptotic analyses are carried out on unpolarized and polarized radiative transfer equations and on a discrete time random walk. Applicable when photons undergo a large number of scatterings, they provide criteria to distinguish between large-scale diffusive and non-diffusive behaviors, typical scales of variation of the radiation field, such as the thermalization length, and specific descriptions for regions close and far from boundaries. Its well organized synthetic view of exact and asymptotic methods of radiative transfer makes this book a valuable resource for both graduate students and professional scientists in astrophysics and beyond.

This book is devoted to a systematic analysis of asymptotic behavior of distributions of various typical functionals of Gaussian random variables and fields. The text begins with an extended introduction, which explains fundamental ideas and sketches the basic methods fully presented later in the book. Good approximate formulas and sharp estimates of the remainders are obtained for a large class of Gaussian and similar processes. The author devotes special attention to the development of asymptotic analysis methods, emphasizing the method of comparison, the double-sum method and the method of moments. The author has added an extended introduction and has significantly revised the text for this translation, particularly the material on the double-sum method.
