Excerpt from Introduction to Commercial German Few boys have experience or imagination enough to enter intelligently into the higher commercial technique. They do not, for in stance, attach any real meaning to bills of exchange, or charter-parties, or bills of lading. Such subjects as these are therefore best left to the practical training of the office. Very few schools can afford, and it is for other reasons not desirable, wholly to separate boys intended for commerce from those intended for professions. Under these circumstances a compromise is inevitable, and in this book an attempt is made for the first time to suggest reasonable terms. On the one hand, all boys may well gain a working knowledge of German by means of a more useful vocabulary and a less complicated grammar than are usually presented in school-books. On the other hand, we may well abandon that higher technique which, even when described in English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from German Composition: A Theoretical and Practical Guide to the Art of Translating English Prose Into German A second edition of this volume having been called for, I wish to express my cordial thanks to the numerous colleagues and friends who adopted it as a text-book for their classes. AS I am engaged in preparing, besides this book, a third edition of two other volumes of my 'german Course, ' and, at the request of the Delegates of the University Press, also a Key to this volume, German Composition, ' I think the present moment opportune for introducing the reformed German Spelling which, by Government regulations, has been taught in German schools for the last five or six years, and is becoming more generally used from year to year in friendly intercourse, papers, periodicals, literature, and commercial correspondence. It is but fair that the students of German in this country should be taught to Spell in the simplified way now universally practised by their German contemporaries. They will at least have nothing to unlearn then; and, although the present spelling reform may be considered but a compromise between the older and the younger schools, there being a tendency in the younger men to go even further than their older colleagues in the simplification of our orthography and to make it still more phonetic and uniform in principle, it will take a long time before the Government will be moved to make modifications of any importance in their regulations. I confidently trust that the great trouble I have bestowed upon the revision of the present edition will be appreciated by teachers and students alike. It will easily be seen that the alterations of the orthography in the various books forming this 'german Course' must have necessarily entailed a very considerable additional expense; but the publication having met with much approval on the part of the public, I was anxious to leave nothing undone in order to adapt it in every respect to the requirements of the times and to make it still more useful. Excerpt from Commercial Geography of the World Of that work, first taken in hand twenty years ago, five editions, representing copies, have been demanded in Austria, Ger many, and Switzerland; while even in other countries, of which the national language is not German, such as Sweden, Norway, Holland, and the United States of America (in German schools), it has been adopted as a medium of instruction in its subject. I may perhaps be justified in taking these facts as proofs that my method is one that has approved itself to some of the most advanced nations of the globe. But I derive a peculiar satisfaction from the translation of my book into English, for if England includes it in the list of its books of instruction, that fact will practically be a letter of introduction to all quarters of the globe. I need not here recount in detail the con tents of my work. Those who even glance through the volume will find that they have before them a piece of honest work, in which I have striven to convey geographical instruction in a form approved by practical experience. In the present age, when international commerce consists no longer in the peaceful exchange of the produc tions of the different zones, but is often a keen life-and-death rivalry between competing nations and continents, the educated merchant must learn to regard the world as an economic organism, in which each nation discharges the function that best accords with its economic development. I believe that my book owes much of its friendly reception to the attempt made in it to account for the economic posi tion of each state by its physical character and by the ethnographic peculiarities and the degree of civilization of its people. I trust that my labours will commend themselves to the English speaking public, that has always endeavoured to accord to technical instruction its due place and privileges by the side of general culture. The Spirit Of Capitalism written by Liah Greenfeld and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-30 with Social Science categories.

The Spirit of Capitalism answers a fundamental question of economics, a question neither economists nor economic historians have been able to answer: what are the reasons (rather than just the conditions) for sustained economic growth? Taking her title from Max Weber's famous study on the same subject, Liah Greenfeld focuses on the problem of motivation behind the epochal change in behavior, which from the sixteenth century on has reoriented one economy after another from subsistence to profit, transforming the nature of economic activity. A detailed analysis of the development of economic consciousness in England, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States allows her to argue that the motivation, or spirit, behind the modern, growth-oriented economy was not the liberation of the rational economic actor, but rather nationalism. Nationalism committed masses of people to an endless race for national prestige and thus brought into being the phenomenon of economic competitiveness. Nowhere has economic activity been further removed from the rational calculation of costs than in the United States, where the economy has come to be perceived as the end-all of political life and the determinant of all social progress. American economic civilization spurs the nation on to ever-greater economic achievement. But it turns Americans into workaholics, unsure of the purpose of their pursuits, and leads American statesmen to exaggerate the weight of economic concerns in foreign policy, often to the detriment of American political influence and the confusion of the rest of the world.
