This open access textbook provides the background needed to correctly use, interpret and understand statistics and statistical data in diverse settings. Part I makes key concepts in statistics readily clear. Parts I and II give an overview of the most common tests (t-test, ANOVA, correlations) and work out their statistical principles. Part III provides insight into meta-statistics (statistics of statistics) and demonstrates why experiments often do not replicate. Finally, the textbook shows how complex statistics can be avoided by using clever experimental design. Both non-scientists and students in Biology, Biomedicine and Engineering will benefit from the book by learning the statistical basis of scientific claims and by discovering ways to evaluate the quality of scientific reports in academic journals and news outlets.

This book provides an accessible presentation of concepts from probability theory, statistical methods, the design of experiments and statistical quality control. It is shaped by the experience of the two teachers teaching statistical methods and concepts to engineering students, over a decade. Practical examples and end-of-chapter exercises are the highlights of the text as they are purposely selected from different fields. Statistical principles discussed in the book have great relevance in several disciplines like economics, commerce, engineering, medicine, health-care, agriculture, biochemistry, and textiles to mention a few. A large number of students with varied disciplinary backgrounds need a course in basics of statistics, the design of experiments and statistical quality control at an introductory level to pursue their discipline of interest. No previous knowledge of probability or statistics is assumed, but an understanding of calculus is a prerequisite. The whole book serves as a master level introductory course in all the three topics, as required in textile engineering or industrial engineering. Organised into 10 chapters, the book discusses three different courses namely statistics, the design of experiments and quality control. Chapter 1 is the introductory chapter which describes the importance of statistical methods, the design of experiments and statistical quality control. Chapters 2–6 deal with statistical methods including basic concepts of probability theory, descriptive statistics, statistical inference, statistical test of hypothesis and analysis of correlation and regression. Chapters 7–9 deal with the design of experiments including factorial designs and response surface methodology, and Chap. 10 deals with statistical quality control.

Experimental Design and Statistics for Psychology: A First Course is a concise and accessible introduction to the design of psychology experiments and the statistical tests used to make sense of their results. Written in a straightforward, effective style and making abundant use of charts, diagrams and figures, this book assumes no prior knowledge of statistics and will be of benefit to all students needing a clear pathway into this often confusing area. The book introduces the main aspects of experimental design and statistics, including: how to formulate precise hypotheses and design experiments aimed at testing them. coverage of different aspects of experimental design. descriptive and inferential statistical analysis of experimental data. the difference between experimental and correlational studies. detailed instructions on how to perform statistical tests with SPSS. An invaluable step-by-step guide to all psychology students needing a firm grasp of the basics, Experimental Design and Statistics for Psychology: A First Course will also fire the imagination of more ambitious students by tackling some of the topic’s more complex, controversial issues. This book is also supported by an online password protected lecturer resource site which features test questions, downloadable figures and tables, and sample SPSS data-sets. This book is meant to be a practical introduction into the use of probability and statistics in experimental physics for advanced undergraduate students and for graduate students. I have attempted to write a short book. It is not intended as a comprehensive text in probability and statistics. I have tried to emphasize areas I have found to be useful when doing experimental physics. Except for the first two chapters the emphasis is on applications and understanding. I have omitted proofs of formal theorems in the interests of brevity unless I felt the proof added to one's intuition in understanding and applying the theorem. Since, however, this is a field in which there are often a number of misunderstandings, it is necessary to state some things with reasonable precision. I have tried to do this when necessary. I assume the student is familiar with partial derivatives and with ele mentary matrix manipulation. A computer is a needed tool for probability and statistics in experimental physics. We will introduce its use in this subject in some of the homework problems. One may interact with a computer in a batch mode or an inter active mode. In a batch mode, one submits FORTRAN or other language programs, the computer processes them, and returns the end results. In the interactive mode, one gives the computer an instruction, the computer processes it, indicates what it has done, and waits for the next instruction.

Professionals in all areas – business; government; thephysical, life, and social sciences; engineering; medicine, etc.– benefit from using statistical experimental design tobetter understand their worlds and then use that understanding toimprove the products, processes, and programs they are responsiblefor. This book aims to provide the practitioners of tomorrow with amemorable, easy to read, engaging guide to statistics andexperimental design. This book uses examples, drawn from a variety of established texts, and embeds them in a business or scientific context, seasoned witha dash of humor, to emphasize the issues and ideas that led to theexperiment and the what-do-we-do-next? steps after theexperiment. Graphical data displays are emphasized as means ofdiscovery and communication and formulas are minimized, with afocus on interpreting the results that software produce. The roleof subject-matter knowledge, and passion, is also illustrated. Theexamples do not require specialized knowledge, and the lessons theycontain are transferrable to other contexts. Fundamentals of Statistical Experimental Design and Analysisintroduces the basic elements of an experimental design, and thebasic concepts underlying statistical analyses. Subsequent chaptersaddress the following families of experimental designs: Completely Randomized designs, with single or multipletreatment factors, quantitative or qualitative Randomized Block designs Latin Square designs Split-Unit designs Repeated Measures designs Robust designs Optimal designs Written in an accessible, student-friendly style, this book issuitable for a general audience and particularly for thoseprofessionals seeking to improve and apply their understanding ofexperimental design.
