The two parts of this book treat probability and statistics as mathematical disciplines and with the same degree of rigour as is adopted for other branches of applied mathematics at the level of a British honours degree. They contain the minimum information about these subjects that any honours graduate in mathematics ought to know. They are written primarily for general mathematicians, rather than for statistical specialists or for natural scientists who need to use statistics in their work. No previous knowledge of probability or statistics is assumed, though familiarity with calculus and linear algebra is required. The first volume takes the theory of probability sufficiently far to be able to discuss the simpler random processes, for example, queueing theory and random walks. The second volume deals with statistics, the theory of making valid inferences from experimental data, and includes an account of the methods of least squares and maximum likelihood; it uses the results of the first volume.

HIGHLIGHTS THE USE OF BAYESIAN STATISTICS TO GAIN INSIGHTS FROM EMPIRICAL DATA Featuring an accessible approach, Bayesian Methods for Management and Business: Pragmatic Solutions for Real Problems demonstrates how Bayesian statistics can help to provide insights into important issues facing business and management. The book draws on multidisciplinary applications and examples and utilizes the freely available software WinBUGS and R to illustrate the integration of Bayesian statistics within data-rich environments. Computational issues are discussed and integrated with coverage of linear models, sensitivity analysis, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), and model comparison. In addition, more advanced models including hierarchal models, generalized linear models, and latent variable models are presented to further bridge the theory and application in real-world usage. Bayesian Methods for Management and Business: Pragmatic Solutions for Real Problems also features: Numerous real-world examples drawn from multiple management disciplines such as strategy, international business, accounting, and information systems An incremental skill-building presentation based on analyzing data sets with widely applicable models of increasing complexity An accessible treatment of Bayesian statistics that is integrated with a broad range of business and management issues and problems A practical problem-solving approach to illustrate how Bayesian statistics can help to provide insight into important issues facing business and management Bayesian Methods for Management and Business: Pragmatic Solutions for Real Problems is an important textbook for Bayesian statistics courses at the advanced MBA-level and also for business and management PhD candidates as a first course in methodology. In addition, the book is a useful resource for management scholars and practitioners as well as business academics and practitioners who seek to broaden their methodological skill sets.

This book offers a gentle yet rigorous introduction to probability theory, with a special focus on finite probability spaces. Drawing inspiration from card games, casino games, mahjong, and two-up, it also delves into real-world applications such as weather forecasting, lotteries, hereditary diseases, and PCR virus testing. Discover which casino game gives you the best chance of winning and which one offers the worst odds. Assuming only a high school mathematics background, this book is an excellent resource for both students and teachers, providing clear explanations and engaging examples. The technical material is lightened with entertaining stories, such as how someone became a millionaire by spotting a flaw in a national lottery and how another person helped fund a war using winnings from a well-known card game he invented. Engaging and informative, this book is perfect for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of probability theory while enjoying some fascinating anecdotes along the way.

To better understand the core concepts of probability and to see how they affect real-world decisions about design and system performance, engineers and scientists might want to ask themselves the following questions: what exactly is meant by probability? What is the precise definition of the 100-year load and how is it calculated? What is an 'extremal' probability distribution? What is the Bayesian approach? How is utility defined? How do games fit into probability theory? What is entropy? How do I apply these ideas in risk analysis? Starting from the most basic assumptions, this 2005 book develops a coherent theory of probability and broadens it into applications in decision theory, design, and risk analysis. This book is written for engineers and scientists interested in probability and risk. It can be used by undergraduates, graduate students, or practicing engineers.
