South Georgia is a remote, sub-Antarctic island located around 1400km southeast of the Falkland Islands. The island is a British Overseas Territory and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including seals, penguins, and albatrosses. Its history is closely linked to the whaling industry, and there are still remnants of the industry visible on the island, including old whaling stations and equipment. Today, South Georgia is a popular destination for tourists interested in wildlife and adventure, offering opportunities for hiking, camping, and kayaking. Despite its remote location, South Georgia has played a significant role in global history. The island was first discovered in 1675 by the English explorer Anthony de la Roché, and it became a popular stop for whalers in the early 19th century. During World War I, South Georgia was a critical link in the British supply chain, as it was used as a base for the Royal Navy's Southern Ocean fleet. Later, in 1982, the island played a role in the Falklands War, as British forces used it as a staging point for their invasion of the Falkland Islands. Overall, South Georgia is a unique and fascinating place with a rich cultural and ecological history.

The introduction earlier this century of Norwegian reindeer to the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia provided scientists with the unusual opportunity of studying the interaction between a large arctic herbivore and a southern ecosystem that had not previously been exposed to grazing by mammals. Originally published in 1988, this book synthesises the results of many years' research into this fascinating ecological situation. The author develops the observations into two main themes. First,a comparative study of the biology and ecology of a deer that occurs in a wide variety of Arctic habitats. Secondly, an investigation into the ways in which an introduced population adapts to a new environment, its relevance to the population ecology of mammals and to the conservation of southern island ecosystems. In doing this, the author discusses many topics including reproductive biology, feeding ecology, growth, mortality and population dynamics. This in-depth study of a single species in an alien environment will appeal to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, research workers in wildlife management and ecology, conservationists and polar scientists.

The Antarctic A Very Short Introduction written by Klaus Dodds and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-26 with History categories.

The Antarctic is one the most hostile natural environments in the world. It is an extraordinary physical space, which changes significantly in shape and size with the passing of the seasons. Politically, it is unique as it contains one of the few areas of continental space not claimed by any nation-state. Scientifically, the continental ice sheet has provided us with vital evidence about the Earth's past climate. In this Very Short Introduction, Klaus Dodds provides a modern account of Antarctica, highlighting the main issues facing the continent today. Looking at how the Antarctic has been explored and represented in the last hundred years, Dodds considers the main exploratory and scientific achievements of the region. He explains how processes such as globalization mean that the Antarctic is increasingly involved in a wider circuit of ideas, goods, people, trade, and governance - all of which have an impact on the future of the region. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly.
