This book has one central objective and that is to demonstrate how the theory of stochastic processes and the techniques of stochastic modeling can be used to effectively model arranged marriage settings, and to use these stochastic models of arranged marriages to explain various aspects of the nature of decision making in arranged marriages. To this end, this chapter first provides a succinct introduction to arranged marriages and then it delineates the contributions of each of the book's nine analytical chapters.

The central objective of this work is to demonstrate how the theory of stochastic processes and the techniques of stochastic modeling can be used to effectively model arranged marriage settings and to help explain various aspects of the nature of decision-making in arranged marriages. Economists_and social scientists more generally_will find this book useful when conducting empirical and theoretical research on a subject of considerable importance in contemporary times.

In this paper I use the theory of Markov Decision Processes to understand aspects of arranged marriages. I construct a stylized model of arranged marriages and, inter alia, I show that a decision maker's optimal marrying rule depends only on the nature of the current marriage proposal, independent of whether there is recall of previous marriage proposals.

Even though arranged marriages have been around for quite a while, the economics literature has paid little attention to the nature of decision making in such marriages. Therefore, very little is known about the impacts of alternate decision rules on the spouse selection question in arranged marriages. Given this state of affairs, our paper has three objectives. First, we construct a simple model of decision making in arranged marriages. Second, we use this model to study the expected utility of a marrying agent when this agent uses, respectively, time invariant and time variant decision rules. Third, we compare and contrast the properties of time invariant and time variant decision rules and we discuss the magnitude of the premium arising from the maintenance of temporal flexibility in decision making.

Even though arranged and love marriages have been around for a long time, to the best of our knowledge, there are no comparative analyses in the economics literature of the relative merits of one or the other kind of marriage. Consequently, the purpose of this note is to conduct a theoretical inquiry into the desirability of arranged versus love marriages. We analyze a simple model of decision making in a dynamic and stochastic setting and show that the decision to have an arranged or a love marriage depends on a comparison of the expected amount of time it takes the agent's well-wishers to find a spouse with the expected total time it takes this agent to find a spouse by himself or herself.

Even though arranged marriages have been around for quite some time, economists have paid little attention to the nature of decision making in such marriages. Therefore, we know very little about the efficacy of traditional methods of decision making in arranged marriages. Given this state of affairs, I have three goals in this paper. First, I formalize the traditional decision making process in arranged marriages. Second, I study the characteristics of this formalized decision making process from the standpoint of a marrying agent. Third, once again from the standpoint of a marrying agent, I compute the probability that the use of this decision making process will result in the marrying agent finding the right partner for himself/herself.

An Introduction To Stochastic Modeling written by Howard M. Taylor and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-10 with Mathematics categories.

An Introduction to Stochastic Modeling provides information pertinent to the standard concepts and methods of stochastic modeling. This book presents the rich diversity of applications of stochastic processes in the sciences. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of diverse types of stochastic models, which predicts a set of possible outcomes weighed by their likelihoods or probabilities. This text then provides exercises in the applications of simple stochastic analysis to appropriate problems. Other chapters consider the study of general functions of independent, identically distributed, nonnegative random variables representing the successive intervals between renewals. This book discusses as well the numerous examples of Markov branching processes that arise naturally in various scientific disciplines. The final chapter deals with queueing models, which aid the design process by predicting system performance. This book is a valuable resource for students of engineering and management science. Engineers will also find this book useful.

Decision Theory An Introduction to Dynamic Programming and Sequential Decisions John Bather University of Sussex, UK Mathematical induction, and its use in solving optimization problems, is a topic of great interest with many applications. It enables us to study multistage decision problems by proceeding backwards in time, using a method called dynamic programming. All the techniques needed to solve the various problems are explained, and the author's fluent style will leave the reader with an avid interest in the subject. * Tailored to the needs of students of optimization and decision theory * Written in a lucid style with numerous examples and applications * Coverage of deterministic models: maximizing utilities, directed networks, shortest paths, critical path analysis, scheduling and convexity * Coverage of stochastic models: stochastic dynamic programming, optimal stopping problems and other special topics * Coverage of advanced topics: Markov decision processes, minimizing expected costs, policy improvements and problems with unknown statistical parameters * Contains exercises at the end of each chapter, with hints in an appendix Aimed primarily at students of mathematics and statistics, the lucid text will also appeal to engineering and science students and those working in the areas of optimization and operations research.
