Serving as the foundation for a one-semester course in stochastic processes for students familiar with elementary probability theory and calculus, Introduction to Stochastic Modeling, Fourth Edition, bridges the gap between basic probability and an intermediate level course in stochastic processes. The objectives of the text are to introduce students to the standard concepts and methods of stochastic modeling, to illustrate the rich diversity of applications of stochastic processes in the applied sciences, and to provide exercises in the application of simple stochastic analysis to realistic problems. New to this edition: - Realistic applications from a variety of disciplines integrated throughout the text, including more biological applications - Plentiful, completely updated problems - Completely updated and reorganized end-of-chapter exercise sets, 250 exercises with answers - New chapters of stochastic differential equations and Brownian motion and related processes - Additional sections on Martingale and Poisson process - Realistic applications from a variety of disciplines integrated throughout the text - Extensive end of chapter exercises sets, 250 with answers - Chapter 1-9 of the new edition are identical to the previous edition - New! Chapter 10 - Random Evolutions - New! Chapter 11- Characteristic functions and Their Applications

Brownian Motion written by René L. Schilling and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-29 with Mathematics categories.

Brownian motion is one of the most important stochastic processes in continuous time and with continuous state space. Within the realm of stochastic processes, Brownian motion is at the intersection of Gaussian processes, martingales, Markov processes, diffusions and random fractals, and it has influenced the study of these topics. Its central position within mathematics is matched by numerous applications in science, engineering and mathematical finance. Often textbooks on probability theory cover, if at all, Brownian motion only briefly. On the other hand, there is a considerable gap to more specialized texts on Brownian motion which is not so easy to overcome for the novice. The authors’ aim was to write a book which can be used as an introduction to Brownian motion and stochastic calculus, and as a first course in continuous-time and continuous-state Markov processes. They also wanted to have a text which would be both a readily accessible mathematical back-up for contemporary applications (such as mathematical finance) and a foundation to get easy access to advanced monographs. This textbook, tailored to the needs of graduate and advanced undergraduate students, covers Brownian motion, starting from its elementary properties, certain distributional aspects, path properties, and leading to stochastic calculus based on Brownian motion. It also includes numerical recipes for the simulation of Brownian motion.

Introduction To Stochastic Processes written by Gregory F. Lawler and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-07-01 with Mathematics categories.

This concise, informal introduction to stochastic processes evolving with time was designed to meet the needs of graduate students not only in mathematics and statistics, but in the many fields in which the concepts presented are important, including computer science, economics, business, biological science, psychology, and engineering. With emphasis on fundamental mathematical ideas rather than proofs or detailed applications, the treatment introduces the following topics: Markov chains, with focus on the relationship between the convergence to equilibrium and the size of the eigenvalues of the stochastic matrix Infinite state space, including the ideas of transience, null recurrence and positive recurrence The three main types of continual time Markov chains and optimal stopping of Markov chains Martingales, including conditional expectation, the optional sampling theorem, and the martingale convergence theorem Renewal process and reversible Markov chains Brownian motion, both multidimensional and one-dimensional Introduction to Stochastic Processes is ideal for a first course in stochastic processes without measure theory, requiring only a calculus-based undergraduate probability course and a course in linear algebra.

This text on stochastic processes and their applications is based on a set of lectures given during the past several years at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). It is an introductory graduate course designed for classroom purposes. Its objective is to provide graduate students of statistics with an overview of some basic methods and techniques in the theory of stochastic processes. The only prerequisites are some rudiments of measure and integration theory and an intermediate course in probability theory. There are more than 50 examples and applications and 243 problems and complements which appear at the end of each chapter. The book consists of 10 chapters. Basic concepts and definitions are pro vided in Chapter 1. This chapter also contains a number of motivating ex amples and applications illustrating the practical use of the concepts. The last five sections are devoted to topics such as separability, continuity, and measurability of random processes, which are discussed in some detail. The concept of a simple point process on R+ is introduced in Chapter 2. Using the coupling inequality and Le Cam's lemma, it is shown that if its counting function is stochastically continuous and has independent increments, the point process is Poisson. When the counting function is Markovian, the sequence of arrival times is also a Markov process. Some related topics such as independent thinning and marked point processes are also discussed. In the final section, an application of these results to flood modeling is presented.
