Sustainability relates with Economics, Society, and Environment. However, one common fact that links them all is the generation of waste. This chapter is divided into two: The first part analyses the current generation of waste as well as its treatment. The second intends to establish policies for the future treatment of waste or, better yet, for ceasing the generation of waste. This first part begins by raising some capital questions: What is waste? Which are the components of waste? Where is waste generated? and How is waste treated? The second part will deal with: Why is waste produced? and What is society doing to correct this problem? 2. 2 First part: Current generation and treatment of waste 2. 2. 1 What is waste? The dictionary defines ‘waste’ as something useless, unwanted, or defective and the word ‘by-product’ as something produced in an industrial or biological process in addition to the principal product. From the point of view of sustainability, the word ‘waste’ does not have that meaning as, though it may be unwanted, it is not something useless and is certainly not defective. Even if in a manufacturing process a product or part of it does not conform to the manufacturer’s quality specs, it does not thereby become waste, but is, rather scrap material that is usually brought back to its original state and then processed again.

The roles of corporate and public stewards and the nature of their social contract with society have been changing over the past two centuries, and those changes have accelerated in recent decades. Moreover, with increasing focus on sustainability factors from the marketplace (regulators, investors, financiers, and consumers), corporate sustainability disclosure is shifting from voluntary to vital. Corporate and public stewards are now responsible for their performance and services from cradle-to-grave: they must properly manage corporate social responsibility and integrate it into their global strategies, rather than consider it as merely a moral obligation or a risk/reputation management exercise. Sustainability analytics, the critical link between sustainability and business strategy, helps professionals track, trend, and transform sustainability information into actionable insights across the value chain and life cycle, to enhance their sustainability performance and its disclosure. This book, Introduction to Sustainability Analytics, provides corporate and public stewards with a comprehensive understanding of how to determine which sustainability metrics are material to them and relevant to their business, and how to incorporate them into corporate strategy, resource allocation, and prioritization. Focusing on practical decision-making needs, it explains how to value and prioritize initiatives, and how to best allocate necessary resources through several real case studies and practical examples. Features: Examines pressing issues such as climate change, water scarcity, and environmental justice Explains how to develop a business case and global strategy for social responsibility Includes both corporate and public policy perspectives on sustainability economics Covers emerging regulations on sustainability disclosure and responsible investing

The book is a concise introduction to an emerging field within economics. Drawing on numerous disciplines, including environmental science, environmental and ecological economics and optimal growth theory, sustainability remains a hazy and complex subject. The author set out with two objectives: one, to bring some order into the proliferating measures, models and management of sustainability; and two, to facilitate access to a complex inter-disciplinary subject area. The book points to practical ways of assessing and enhancing the long-term environmental and economic sustainability of our economies. The result is a fully international study that should bridge the gap between disciplines and prove to be an essential guide to anyone interested in one of the most important concepts in the social sciences.

Every day, more and more kinds of historical data become available, opening exciting new avenues of inquiry but also new challenges. This updated and expanded book describes and demonstrates the ways these data can be explored to construct cultural heritage knowledge, for research and in teaching and learning. It helps humanities scholars to grasp Big Data in order to do their work, whether that means understanding the underlying algorithms at work in search engines or designing and using their own tools to process large amounts of information. Demonstrating what digital tools have to offer and also what 'digital' does to how we understand the past, the authors introduce the many different tools and developing approaches in Big Data for historical and humanistic scholarship, show how to use them, what to be wary of, and discuss the kinds of questions and new perspectives this new macroscopic perspective opens up. Originally authored 'live' online with ongoing feedback from the wider digital history community, Exploring Big Historical Data breaks new ground and sets the direction for the conversation into the future. Exploring Big Historical Data should be the go-to resource for undergraduate and graduate students confronted by a vast corpus of data, and researchers encountering these methods for the first time. It will also offer a helping hand to the interested individual seeking to make sense of genealogical data or digitized newspapers, and even the local historical society who are trying to see the value in digitizing their holdings.

Introduction to Sustainability: Humanity and the Environment The Brundtland Report did not technically invent the term "sustainability," it was the first credible and widely-disseminated study that probed its meaning in the context of the global impacts of humans on the environment. Its main and often quoted definition refers to sustainable development as "...development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." The report uses the terms "sustainable development," "sustainable," and "sustainability" interchangeably, emphasizing the connections among social equity, economic productivity, and environmental quality. The pathways for integration of these may differ nation by nation; still these pathways must share certain common traits: "the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given, and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs." Chapter Outline: What is Sustainability? The IPAT Equation Human Consumption Patterns and the "Rebound" Effect Challenges for Sustainability The Open Courses Library introduces you to the best Open Source Courses.
