This revised and expanded monograph presents the general theory for frames and Riesz bases in Hilbert spaces as well as its concrete realizations within Gabor analysis, wavelet analysis, and generalized shift-invariant systems. Compared with the first edition, more emphasis is put on explicit constructions with attractive properties. Based on the exiting development of frame theory over the last decade, this second edition now includes new sections on the rapidly growing fields of LCA groups, generalized shift-invariant systems, duality theory for as well Gabor frames as wavelet frames, and open problems in the field. Key features include: *Elementary introduction to frame theory in finite-dimensional spaces * Basic results presented in an accessible way for both pure and applied mathematicians * Extensive exercises make the work suitable as a textbook for use in graduate courses * Full proofs includ ed in introductory chapters; only basic knowledge of functional analysis required * Explicit constructions of frames and dual pairs of frames, with applications and connections to time-frequency analysis, wavelets, and generalized shift-invariant systems * Discussion of frames on LCA groups and the concrete realizations in terms of Gabor systems on the elementary groups; connections to sampling theory * Selected research topics presented with recommendations for more advanced topics and further readin g * Open problems to stimulate further research An Introduction to Frames and Riesz Bases will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and engineering. Professionals working in digital signal processing who wish to understand the theory behind many modern signal processing tools may also find this book a useful self-study reference. Review of the first edition: "Ole Christensen’s An Introduction to Frames and Riesz Bases is a first-rate introduction to the field ... . The book provides an excellent exposition of these topics. The material is broad enough to pique the interest of many readers, the included exercises supply some interesting challenges, and the coverage provides enough background for those new to the subject to begin conducting original research." — Eric S. Weber, American Mathematical Monthly, Vol. 112, February, 2005

A very carefully crafted introduction to the theory and some of the applications of Gröbner bases … contains a wealth of illustrative examples and a wide variety of useful exercises, the discussion is everywhere well-motivated, and further developments and important issues are well sign-posted … has many solid virtues and is an ideal text for beginners in the subject … certainly an excellent text. —Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society As the primary tool for doing explicit computations in polynomial rings in many variables, Gröbner bases are an important component of all computer algebra systems. They are also important in computational commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. This book provides a leisurely and fairly comprehensive introduction to Gröbner bases and their applications. Adams and Loustaunau cover the following topics: the theory and construction of Gröbner bases for polynomials with coefficients in a field, applications of Gröbner bases to computational problems involving rings of polynomials in many variables, a method for computing syzygy modules and Gröbner bases in modules, and the theory of Gröbner bases for polynomials with coefficients in rings. With over 120 worked-out examples and 200 exercises, this book is aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students. It would be suitable as a supplement to a course in commutative algebra or as a textbook for a course in computer algebra or computational commutative algebra. This book would also be appropriate for students of computer science and engineering who have some acquaintance with modern algebra.

[Hilbert's] style has not the terseness of many of our modem authors in mathematics, which is based on the assumption that printer's labor and paper are costly but the reader's effort and time are not. H. Weyl [143] The purpose of this book is to describe the classical problems in additive number theory and to introduce the circle method and the sieve method, which are the basic analytical and combinatorial tools used to attack these problems. This book is intended for students who want to lel?Ill additive number theory, not for experts who already know it. For this reason, proofs include many "unnecessary" and "obvious" steps; this is by design. The archetypical theorem in additive number theory is due to Lagrange: Every nonnegative integer is the sum of four squares. In general, the set A of nonnegative integers is called an additive basis of order h if every nonnegative integer can be written as the sum of h not necessarily distinct elements of A. Lagrange 's theorem is the statement that the squares are a basis of order four. The set A is called a basis offinite order if A is a basis of order h for some positive integer h. Additive number theory is in large part the study of bases of finite order. The classical bases are the squares, cubes, and higher powers; the polygonal numbers; and the prime numbers. The classical questions associated with these bases are Waring's problem and the Goldbach conjecture.

This unique book provides the first introduction to crystal base theory from the combinatorial point of view. Crystal base theory was developed by Kashiwara and Lusztig from the perspective of quantum groups. Its power comes from the fact that it addresses many questions in representation theory and mathematical physics by combinatorial means. This book approaches the subject directly from combinatorics, building crystals through local axioms (based on ideas by Stembridge) and virtual crystals. It also emphasizes parallels between the representation theory of the symmetric and general linear groups and phenomena in combinatorics. The combinatorial approach is linked to representation theory through the analysis of Demazure crystals. The relationship of crystals to tropical geometry is also explained.

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is. Yogi Berra A SINGULAR Introduction to Commutative Algebra offers a rigorous intro duction to commutative algebra and, at the same time, provides algorithms and computational practice. In this book, we do not separate the theoretical and the computational part. Coincidentally, as new concepts are introduced, it is consequently shown, by means of concrete examples and general proce dures, how these concepts are handled by a computer. We believe that this combination of theory and practice will provide not only a fast way to enter a rather abstract field but also a better understanding of the theory, showing concurrently how the theory can be applied. We exemplify the computational part by using the computer algebra sys tem SINGULAR, a system for polynomial computations, which was developed in order to support mathematical research in commutative algebra, algebraic geometry and singularity theory. As the restriction to a specific system is necessary for such an exposition, the book should be useful also for users of other systems (such as Macaulay2 and CoCoA) with similar goals. Indeed, once the algorithms and the method of their application in one system is known, it is usually not difficult to transfer them to another system.
