This text serves as a concise introduction to the ocean of information collectively known as “Engineering Mathematics.” Admittedly, compiling everything into a short book that is useful to any audience is an impossible task; therefore, we picked a few main ideas holding up the mathematics within the engineering curriculum instead of stuffing all of the details into such a small package. This text addresses conceptual understanding as often as possible by providing an intuitive basis for formalized study within engineering/mathematics. Whether you are a math or science instructor tasked to teach an engineering class, a high school student looking into engineering, or an engineering student already, we hope you are able to walk away from this text with tangible outcomes—maybe even a refined perspective on the subject.

A market-leading text providing a fundamental source of knowledge on key mathematical concepts every engineer needs. Mathematics for Engineers, 5th edition by Croft and Davidson, is the ultimate textbook in the field that will offer you the tools and support you need to develop vital mathematical skills for your profession. Practical, informal, and accessible, this book covers all requirements for a first-year engineering maths course, together with introductory material for even more advanced topics. Although the breadth of knowledge introduced requires a firm grasp of algebra to perform the techniques of calculus, the textbook will guide you through the foundations of the discipline and help you develop and nurture your skills gradually, introducing more complex concepts as you progress through the chapters. The latest edition combines traditional learning methods with interactive examples that will further support your learning, encouraging you to participate actively in the learning process and perform the relevant calculations to work through them. The main features also include: A brief introduction of the material in each chapter, followed by an explanation of the concepts presented. Examples and applications in each chapter that will help you cement your knowledge on the topics, encouraging you to participate in the problem-solving process. Highlighted key points and important results, helping you remember what you study - especially during the revision process. In the mid-1960's I had the pleasure of attending a talk by Lotfi Zadeh at which he presented some of his basic (and at the time, recent) work on fuzzy sets. Lotfi's algebra of fuzzy subsets of a set struck me as very nice; in fact, as a graduate student in the mid-1950's, I had suggested similar ideas about continuous-truth-valued propositional calculus (inffor "and", sup for "or") to my advisor, but he didn't go for it (and in fact, confused it with the foundations of probability theory), so I ended up writing a thesis in a more conventional area of mathematics (differential algebra). I especially enjoyed Lotfi's discussion of fuzzy convexity; I remember talking to him about possible ways of extending this work, but I didn't pursue this at the time. I have elsewhere told the story of how, when I saw C. L. Chang's 1968 paper on fuzzy topological spaces, I was impelled to try my hand at fuzzi fying algebra. This led to my 1971 paper "Fuzzy groups", which became the starting point of an entire literature on fuzzy algebraic structures. In 1974 King-Sun Fu invited me to speak at a U. S. -Japan seminar on Fuzzy Sets and their Applications, which was to be held that summer in Berkeley.

Introductory Mathematics for Engineering Applications, 2nd Edition, provides first-year engineering students with a practical, applications-based approach to the subject. This comprehensive textbook covers pre-calculus, trigonometry, calculus, and differential equations in the context of various discipline-specific engineering applications. The text offers numerous worked examples and problems representing a wide range of real-world uses, from determining hydrostatic pressure on a retaining wall to measuring current, voltage, and energy stored in an electrical capacitor. Rather than focusing on derivations and theory, clear and accessible chapters deliver the hands-on mathematical knowledge necessary to solve the engineering problems students will encounter in their careers. The textbook is designed for courses that complement traditional math prerequisites for introductory engineering courses — enabling students to advance in their engineering curriculum without first completing calculus requirements. Now available in enhanced ePub format, this fully updated second edition helps students apply mathematics to engineering scenarios involving physics, statics, dynamics, strength of materials, electric circuits, and more.

Rattan and Klingbeil’s Introductory Mathematics for Engineering Applications is designed to help improve engineering student success through application-driven, just-in-time engineering math instruction. Intended to be taught by engineering faculty rather than math faculty, the text emphasizes using math to solve engineering problems instead of focusing on derivations and theory. This text implements an applied approach to teaching math concepts that are essential to introductory engineering courses that has been proven to improve the retention of students in engineering majors from the first to second year and beyond.
