The great World War was more than two-thirds over when America entered the struggle, and yet in a sense this country was in the war from its very beginning. Three great inventions controlled the character of the fighting and made it different from any other the world has ever seen. These three inventions were American. The submarine was our invention; it carried the war into the sea. The airplane was an American invention; it carried the war into the sky. We invented the machine-gun; it drove the war into the ground. It is not my purpose to boast of American genius but, rather, to show that we entered the war with heavy responsibilities. The inven-tions we had given to the world had been developed marvelously in other lands. Furthermore they were in the hands of a determined and unscrupulous foe, and we found before us the task of overcoming the very machines that we had created. Yankee ingenuity was faced with a real test. The only way of overcoming the airplane was to build more and better machines than the enemy possessed. This we tried to do, but first we had to be taught by our allies the latest refinements of this machine, and the war was over before we had more than started our aërial program. The machine-gun and its accessory, barbed wire (also an American invention), were overcome by the tank; and we may find what little comfort we can in the fact that its invention was inspired by the sight of an American farm tractor. But the tank was a British creation and was undoubtedly the most important invention of the war. On the sea we were faced with a most baffling problem. The U-boat could not be coped with by the building of swarms of submarines. The essential here was a means of locating the enemy and destroying him even while he lurked under the surface. Two American inventions, the hydrophone and the depth bomb, made the lot of the U-boat decidedly unenviable and they hastened if they did not actually end German frightfulness on the sea. But these were by no means the only inventions of the war. Great Britain showed wonderful ingenuity and resourcefulness in many di-rections; France did marvels with the airplane and showed great clev-erness in her development of the tank and there was a host of minor inventions to her credit; while Italy showed marked skill in the crea-tion of large airplanes and small seacraft.

The noted military historian presents an illuminating study of trench warfare during WWI—and how it influenced the French Army’s evolution. Michel Goya’s Flesh and Steel during the Great War is a major contribution to our understanding of the French Army’s experience on the Western Front, and how that experience impacted the future of its military theory and practice. Goya explores the way in which the senior commanders and ordinary soldiers responded to the extraordinary challenges posed by the mass industrial warfare of the early twentieth century. In 1914 the French army went to war with a flawed doctrine, brightly-colored uniforms and a dire shortage of modern, heavy artillery. How then, over four years of relentless, attritional warfare, did it become the great, industrialized army that emerged victorious in 1918? To show how this change occurred, the author examines the pre-war ethos and organization of the army. He describes in telling detail how, through a process of analysis and innovation, the French army underwent the deepest and fastest transformation in its history.

The first instruments and machines of 'modern' war For as long as people have formed themselves into factions there has been warfare. The nature of conflict changed little in its fundamentals until the industrial revolution. It is a sad but inevitable consequence of the age of industry and mass production that it introduced not only the benefits of manufactured goods and improved transportation, but the development of new and ever more efficient methods by which man could destroy his fellow man. It was during the American Civil War, with the introduction of the Minie ball and the emergence of the submarine and the ironclad warship that the science and technology of waging war took its first steps in a race which would result-just half a century later-in a transformation in the kinds and numbers of instruments of destruction employed on the field of battle, on and under the oceans and-for the first time-in the skies. The author of this book examines weapons of war employed in the first globally significant conflict of the 20th century-the First World War. Here the reader will not just read about mines, shells, bombs, guns, torpedoes, submarines and aircraft of the period, but also gain an understanding as to how they were constructed, their constituent parts, how they worked and their capabilities in battle. This book is an invaluable addition to the libraries of students of the Great War and will interest all those fascinated by the development of modern weaponry. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.

When America entered World War I, it seemed as though the world had turned upside down. Many new technologies were developed on both sides of this conflict, challenging the men and women who fought in it in ways they never could have imagined. Among these developments were the military tank, the tracer bullet, and most deadly of all, poison gas. This book examines the times and events of the war, the key technologies that influenced and affected it, and the lasting impact these had on global society.
