Phosphate glasses have several advantages over conventional silicate and borate glasses due to their superior physical properties such as high thermal expansion coefficient, low melting and softening temperatures, and high ultraviolet transmission for different potential industrial and scientific applications. Phosphate glasses are structurally interesting because they accept a wide range of ion substitution. The PO4 tetrahedrons are linked together with covalent bonding in chains or rings by bridging oxygens. Neighboring phosphate chains are linked together by cross bonding between the metal cations and two non-bridging oxygen atoms of each PO4 tetrahedron. For the Transition Metal ions, the d orbitals are five-fold degenerate. In crystals as well as glasses, the orbital degeneracy is lifted due to the presence of surrounding ligands. This work explains the existence of mixed alkali effect by the bond nature, site symmetry of various first group transition metal ions in a vitreous Phosphate glass network.

"The effect of melting history on the iron redox equilibrium, structure, crystallization and properties of a binary iron phosphate glass with a 40Fe2O3-60P2O5 mol%, batch composition were investigated. The structure and properties of single and mixed alkali iron phosphate glasses were also studied. Mössbauer, Raman and infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the changes in the concentration of iron ions and phosphate units in the structure. Differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis were used to investigate crystallization. Density, molar volume, thermal expansion, dc electrical conductivity and dielectric constant and loss tangent were measured. The heat capacity and glass transition behavior of the glasses was also measured by the differential scanning calorimeter method. The effect of the melting temperature is stronger than the melting time on the concentration of Fe2 ions in iron phosphate glasses. The pyrophosphate network in iron phosphate glasses and their general properties do not change either with melting temperature and time or with adding up to 20 mol% of single and mixed alkali oxides. The dissolution rate (in deionized water) of these glasses is generally very low (~10−9 g/cm2/min) and nearly independent of the relative concentration of Fe2 or Fe3+ ions. The dissolution rate of the iron phosphate glasses containing 20 mol% of single or mixed alkali oxide can be comparable to that of window glass. There is no mixed alkali effect in the iron phosphate glasses. The crystallization tendency indicates that the glass structure becomes closer to that of crystalline Fe3(P2O-- )2 with increasing concentration of Fe2+ ions in the glass. The large fragility parameters indicates that the iron phosphate glasses belong in the category of the fragile glass-forming liquids"--Abstract, leaf v

The Raman spectra of analogous ion exchanged and mixed alkali disilicate and aluminodisilicate glasses of the same relative composition of dissimilar cations have been determined and employed to investigate the origin of the similarity of the mechanical loss features exhibited by them. Ion exchange of Na+ for Li+ in Li2O-Al2O3-2SiO2 glasses is shown to yield glasses whose network structure is different from that of the mixed alkali glasses of the same stoichiometry, but to attain that structure upon annealing. The network structure of ion exchanged and conventionally mixed alkali disilicate glasses are apparently identical. These results are interpreted in light of the mechanical loss spectra of the analogous glasses prepared in the two ways. (Author).

The far infrared and Raman spectra of several series of mixed alkali metaphosphate glasses have been investigated as a function of the mole fraction, x, of the network modifying ionic oxides in xM2O(1-x)M2O.P2O5. The frequencies of the cation-motion bands in the far infrared spectra, which correspond to cation-site vibrations, do not shift with x, indicating that the vibrationally significant local geometry and forces associated with a particular cation are unaffected by the introduction of the second cation into the glass structure. Each Raman-active band due to vibrations of the metaphosphate network occurs at a different frequency for each pure glass (x-0 or 1), but for mixed alkali glasses only one band occurs for each type of mode and it varies linearly with x. This indicates that the cations in these mixed alkali glasses are homogeneously distributed, there is no significant molecular-level domain formation, and the phosphate chains are associated with an averaged cation environment whose effect on the chain modes varies with x. A simple vibrational model is presented which shows that the cation-dependent shifts are due to small changes in network bond angles and variation of the cation-site forces. (Author).
