Phosphate glasses have several advantages over conventional silicate and borate glasses due to their superior physical properties such as high thermal expansion coefficient, low melting and softening temperatures, and high ultraviolet transmission for different potential industrial and scientific applications. Phosphate glasses are structurally interesting because they accept a wide range of ion substitution. The PO4 tetrahedrons are linked together with covalent bonding in chains or rings by bridging oxygens. Neighboring phosphate chains are linked together by cross bonding between the metal cations and two non-bridging oxygen atoms of each PO4 tetrahedron. For the Transition Metal ions, the d orbitals are five-fold degenerate. In crystals as well as glasses, the orbital degeneracy is lifted due to the presence of surrounding ligands. This work explains the existence of mixed alkali effect by the bond nature, site symmetry of various first group transition metal ions in a vitreous Phosphate glass network.

The mechanical properties of mixed alkali glasses have been analyzed in order to determine their common features, including systematic variations with composition, and to define clearly the phenomena that must be explained. New assignments of the mechanical loss peaks are made, and approaches to developing a cooperative theory for the phenomena, especially the compositional variation of the peak temperatures and loss tangents, are presented and discussed. The far infrared and Raman spectra of several series of mixed alkali metaphosphate glasses have been investigated as a function of the mole fraction, x, of the network modifying ionic oxides in xM2O(1-x)M2O.P2O5. The frequencies of the cation-motion bands in the far infrared spectra, which correspond to cation-site vibrations, do not shift with x, indicating that the vibrationally significant local geometry and forces associated with a particular cation are unaffected by the introduction of the second cation into the glass structure. Each Raman-active band due to vibrations of the metaphosphate network occurs at a different frequency for each pure glass (x-0 or 1), but for mixed alkali glasses only one band occurs for each type of mode and it varies linearly with x. This indicates that the cations in these mixed alkali glasses are homogeneously distributed, there is no significant molecular-level domain formation, and the phosphate chains are associated with an averaged cation environment whose effect on the chain modes varies with x. A simple vibrational model is presented which shows that the cation-dependent shifts are due to small changes in network bond angles and variation of the cation-site forces. (Author).

Ion-implantation-induced alkali depletion in simple alkali-silicate glasses (12M2O.88SiO2) has been studied for implantations at room temperature and near 77K. Results are consistent with a mechanism for alkali removal, by heavy ion bombardment, based on radiation-enhanced migration and preferential removal of alkali from the outermost layers. Similar results were obtained for mixed-alkali glasses ((12-x)Cs2.O.xM2O.88SiO2) where, in addition, a mixed-alkali effect may also be operative. Some preliminary experiments with ion implantation through thin Al films on SiO2 glass and on a phosphate glass show that inter-diffusion takes place and suggest that this ion-mixing technique may be a useful method for altering the physical properties of glass surfaces.
