The mechanical properties of mixed alkali glasses have been analyzed in order to determine their common features, including systematic variations with composition, and to define clearly the phenomena that must be explained. New assignments of the mechanical loss peaks are made, and approaches to developing a cooperative theory for the phenomena, especially the compositional variation of the peak temperatures and loss tangents, are presented and discussed. An approach to understanding the mixed alkali effect in binary ionic oxide glasses is proposed. It is based on an expression for the composition dependence of activated processes which is inherently cooperative, and employs the regular solution model for the specification of this dependence. A detailed molecular-level model, using spectroscopic data, is introduced to obtain an estimate of the magnitude of the parameters of the approach. It is shown that the composition dependences of the non-linearly varying properties of mixed alkali systems, including both the measured properties and the exponential and pre-exponential factors obtained from their temperature dependence, can be understood using this approach. "Internal friction and sodium and potassium self-diffusion coefficients for (1-X)Na2O·XK2O·3SiO2 glasses were measured. Alkali diffusion was measured between 300 and 500°C using radioactive isotopes and a thin-sectioning technique. Internal friction was measured from room temperature to 500°C, 0.1 to 2000 Hz. Comparison between alkali diffusion and internal friction data for Na-K glasses with those for other mixed-alkali glasses shows that the mixed-alkali peak is related to alkali mobility. It is concluded that the mechanism for mixed-alkali internal friction is a cooperative rearrangement of dissimilar alkali ions, with the slower moving ion controlling the rate of reorientation"--Abstract, leaf iii.

"The mixed alkali effect in silicate glasses was examined from internal friction measurements made over the temperature range from -190 to 500°C and at a frequency of 0.4 Hz. Supplemental measurements of the activation energy for the different internal friction peaks, dynamic shear modulus, density, and index of refraction were also made. All measurements were confined to silicate glasses containing mixtures of Li-Na, Li-K, Li-Rb, Li-Cs, Na-K, Na-Rb, Na-Cs, and K-Rb. Rötger's interpretation of the internal friction of mixed-alkali silicate glasses is shown to be incorrect. A previously unreported internal friction peak was observed whenever two different alkali oxides were present simultaneously, The behavior of this peak in the different mixed alkali glasses is more easily correlated with the radius ratio of the two alkali ions present than with the mass ratio. A stress induced alkali ion position interchange is suggested as the probable mechanism responsible for this peak"--Abstract, leaf ii.
