Edgar Lawrence Smith, (1882-1971) was an economist, investment manager and author of the influential book “Common Stocks as Long Term Investments”, which promoted the then-surprising idea that stocks excel bonds in long-term yield. . He worked in banking and other financial endeavors in the years after college, then signed on in 1922 as an adviser to the brokerage firm Low, Dixon & Company. While there, he later recounted in his Harvard class’s 50th reunion yearbook, “I tried to write a pamphlet on why bonds were the best form of long term investment. But supporting evidence for this thesis could not be found.” This discovery led to the 1924 publication of “Common Stocks as Long Term Investments.” The book was widely reviewed and praised, and became a key intellectual support for the 1920s stock market boom. Its success enabled Smith to launch a mutual fund firm, “Investment Managers Company.” It also garnered him an invitation from the economist John Maynard Keynes, who had favorably reviewed the book in “The Nation”, to join the Royal Economic Society. The Wall Street Crash of 1929 brought a turn in Smith’s fortunes.—Print Ed.

To achieve real financial independence, it is important to make yourself less dependent on a specific income stream (i.e. your primary job). Everybody would agree that a secondary income stream would be great, yet few actually do it. Most people either lack motivation or become distracted with other things in life to put effort and discipline to make it happen for them. Investing is one common means of developing a secondary income stream but the lack of a viable investment plan is a common reason for most failures. Warren Buffet taught us that: ‘What is needed is a sound intellectual framework for making decisions and the ability to keep emotions from eroding that framework’. This book attempts to provide amateur investors an easy-to-read guide on knowing your objectives, risk appetite to develop an investment plan, the macro considerations and the use of some basic financial tools to help in stock selection. You may wish to test your investment plan on paper and then in the market with real money to boost your confidence and understanding of the knowledge learnt. Happy reading & investing to all!

INVESTING - A Beginner's guide for long term successAn Introduction to investing in Stocks & Bonds, Mutual Funds, Exchange Traded Funds, Real estate and Start-upsStanley H Bryce Statistically only 5-10% of all participants in the global financial markets are successful! This information can be checked up and it's shocking to hear that over 90% of investor's and traders in the markets will never make any money. The main reason for this is in my experience the following: People don't plan their investing or think too much about it, from what I experienced unusually it starts out with dissatisfaction of you current financial situation, way too high taxes, way too low interests in your savings account and also inflation take's a big chunk out of your hard earned money. Someday you come across your neighbour, or your co-worker who is also just a regular guy and he tells you about his or her investing portfolio, you get so excited that 2 month later your start your own portfolio as basically the markets will always go your direction and this guy told you about diversification so it will not be a problem... here comes the bear market, you are totally frozen and don't know how to react on this rapid price movement and usually people tend to sell the stocks at the point of the most fear - the market lows. One year later you could have lost 50% of your investing portfolio. Basically what I want to show you is the importance of a substantial knowledge basis when acting in the markets and start out investing as the statics are on our side if we just do the right things. The S&P 500 index has a long-term return of above 7.5% per year which is incredibly good if you are just starting out. Now, this bible for long-term investing continues its tradition with a fourth edition featuring updated, revised, and new material that will keep you competitive in the global market and up-to-date on the latest index instruments. Wharton School professor Jeremy Siegel provides a potent mix of new evidence, research, and analysis supporting his key strategies for amassing a solid portfolio with enhanced returns and reduced risk. In a seamless narrative that incorporates the historical record of the markets with the realities of today's investing environment, the fourth edition features: A new chapter on globalization that documents how the emerging world will soon overtake the developed world and how it impacts the global economy An extended chapter on indexing that includes fundamentally weighted indexes, which have historically offered better returns and lower volatility than their capitalization-weighted counterparts Insightful analysis on what moves the market and how little we know about the sources of big market changes A sobering look at behavioral finance and the psychological factors that can lead investors to make irrational investment decisions A major highlight of this new edition of Stocks for the Long Run is the chapter on global investing. With the U.S. stock market currently holding less than half of the world's equity capitalization, it's important for investors to diversify abroad. This updated edition shows you how to create an “efficient portfolio” that best balances asset allocation in domestic and foreign markets and provides thorough coverage on sector allocation across the globe. How to overcome barriers to the long-term investments that are essential for solving the world’s biggest problems There has never been a greater need for long-term investments to tackle the world’s most difficult problems, such as climate change, human health, and decaying infrastructure. And it is increasingly unlikely that the public sector will be willing or able to fill this gap. If these critical needs are to be met, the major pools of long-term, patient capital—including pensions, sovereign wealth funds, university endowments, and wealthy individuals and families—will have to play a large role. In this accessible and authoritative account of long-term capital investment, two leading experts on the subject, Victoria Ivashina and Josh Lerner, highlight the significant hurdles facing long-term investors and propose concrete ways to overcome these difficulties.
