The past several decades have seen remarkable improvements in several major public health issues affecting young people: smoking rates are down, traffic crash fatalities have declined, and other unintentional injuries have declined in number. Yet, similar successes have not been replicated in mental health. Why are we, as a society, failing to make needed investments in children's mental health? How can we ensure that programs with the highest levels of evidence and economic returns reach a larger fraction of the young people and families who could benefit from them? Investing in Children's Mental Health investigates and addresses three interrelated questions:1) What are some of the best available investments to improve the mental health of children and adolescents in the United States? 2) To what extent are these investments being made? 3) What can practitioners, child-serving organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders do to promote such investments? Daniel Eisenberg and Ramesh Raghavan open with a broad synthesis of the latest research and evidence, then introduce a series of case studies featuring interventions and programs spanning a variety of settings and age groups: home visiting programs, parenting programs, social and emotional learning (SEL) programs in schools, multisystemic therapy (MST) for troubled youth, and the Communities that Care framework for addressing youth substance use and wellbeing. The final sections distill key themes and offer recommendations for a range of stakeholders including policymakers, administrators, funders, and practitioners. By providing a road map to overcoming the barriers to progress for youth mental health, Investing in Children's Mental Health will help push forward our society's thinking and actions regarding this ongoing population health concern.

The integration and coordination of health, education, nutrition, social protection, and other services have the potential to improve the lives of children and their caregivers around the world. However, integration and coordination of policies and programs affecting early childhood development can create both risks and benefits. In different localities, these services are more or less effective in achieving their objectives. They also are more or less coordinated in delivering services to the same recipients, and in some cases services are delivered by integrated multisectoral organizations. The result is a rich arena for policy analysis and change and a complex challenge for public- and private-sector organizations that are seeking to improve the lives of children. To examine the science and policy issues involved in coordinating investments in children and their caregivers, the Forum on Investing in Young Children Globally held a workshop in Hong Kong on March 14-15, 2015. Held in partnership with the Centre for Health Education and Health Promotion and Wu Yee Sun College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the workshop brought together researchers, policy makers, program practitioners, and other experts from 22 countries. This report highlights the presentations and discussions of the event.

Mental health problems have been increasingly recognised as one of the most significant health concerns for children and adolescents in developed countries. The World Health Organization estimates that about 25% of the world’s population experiences a mental health problem at some point in their life. In about half of the cases, development of symptoms starts before a child’s 14th birthday. It is therefore important to develop evidence-based interventions that can help address mental health issues in children. These interventions could then help generate new evidence themselves. The objective of this research note is to summarise the findings presented by existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses of interventions aimed at preventing the development of anxiety and/or depression in children. Systematic reviews collate existing evidence on an issue in a structured way by using clear criteria to identify and assess available documentation. This research note focuses on anxiety and depression specifically, as these are the most common mental health issues in children. We summarise conclusions from 12 reviews that were identified through a targeted search, and which cover a large number of interventions (as shown in Table 1). The Annex presents a detailed description of the search methodology and the criteria that have been used to decide whether a source should be included or excluded in the review.

To examine the science, policy, and practice surrounding supporting family and community investments in young children globally and children in acute disruptions, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop in partnership with the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from July 27-29, 2015. The workshop examined topics related to supporting family and community investments in young children globally. Examples of types of investments included financial and human capital. Participants also discussed how systems can better support children, families, and communities through acute disruptions such as the Ebola outbreak. Over the course of the 3-day workshop, researchers, policy makers, program practitioners, funders, young influencers, and other experts from 19 countries discussed how best to support family and community investments across areas of health, education, nutrition, social protection, and other service domains. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

The Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health calls for the transformative change necessary to shape a more prosperous, sustainable future for children and adolescents. To implement the Strategy and contribute to Sustainable Development Goals, strategic shifts are necessary in maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health programming. It is no longer sufficient to save lives: health and other sectors must contribute to improving their health and well-being, and unlocking their full potential. An approach to health and development that supports a continuum of care throughout life is therefore essential to promote survival, enhance well-being and protect children and adolescents against risks and disease. Programmes to improve their health and well-being must be universal, while identifying those at risk or who are vulnerable and giving them extra support and protection required. This Framework outlines the rationale, highlights the areas for action and calls for a shift in redesigning child and adolescent programming. It calls for whole of government and whole of society approach to life course programming to achieve a shared goal and integrated coordinated response to ensuring health and well-being of children and adolescents.

The Cost of Inaction for Young Children Globally is the summary of a workshop hosted by the Institute of Medicine Forum on Investing in Young Children Globally in April 2014 to focus on investments in young children and the cost of inaction. Participants explored existing, new, and innovative science and research from around the world to translate this evidence into sound and strategic investments in policies and practices that will make a difference in the lives of children and their caregivers. This report discusses intersections across health, education, nutrition, living conditions, and social protection and how investments of economic, natural, social, and other resources can sustain or promote early childhood development and well-being.
