São Tomé e Príncipe é um país insular localizado no sudeste do Golfo da Guiné, no Centro e Oeste da costa da África. A sua localização privlegiada, acrescida das paisagens naturais maravilhosas, propiciam ao país recursos vastos de turismo. Ao mesmo tempo, a indústria petrólífera encontra-se ainda na fase inicial de desenvolvimento, além do país possuir recursos florestais, biológicos e da pesca relativamente ricos. De acordo com o "Relatório de investimento Mundial de 2021" publicado pela Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Comércio e Desenvolvimento (UNCTAD), aponta que até finais de 2020, São Tomé e Príncipe atraiu US$310 milhões em stock de investimento directo estrangeiro. Com base nas estatísticas do Ministério do Comércio da China, até finais de 2020, o stock de investimento directo da China em São Tomé e Príncipe registou um valor de US$1,99 milhões. Em 2020, os principais destinos de exportação de São Tomé e Príncipe são a Holanda, a Bélgica, Portugal e a Alemanha, sendo os principais produtos o cacau, óleo de palma, coco seco, café.
