This book offers a multidisciplinary approach to locative media, concentrating on specific authors and practitioners whose works exist in print and digital manifestations. The book shapes the discourse for an extensive theorization of locative media works from a narrative perspective. It investigates how different genres ⸺ print novels, fictional and non-fictional locative narratives, locative games, and audio texts ⸺ are affected by locative media practice. Part I examines print manifestations of locative media in William Gibson’s fiction. Part II discusses e-book and audio book locative narrative experimentations, suggesting ways to create and categorize locative texts. Drawing on hypertext theory, Part III views Niantic locative games as an instantiation of locative media storytelling practice that challenges digital narrativity. Mobilities has become an important framework to understand and analyze contemporary social, spatial, economic and political practices. Especially as mobile media become seamlessly integrated into transportation networks, navigating urban spaces, and connecting with social networks while on the move, researchers need new approaches and methods to bring together mobilities with mobile communication and locative media. Mobile communication scholars have focused on cell phones, often ignoring broader connections to urban spaces, geography, and locational media. As a result, they emphasized virtual mobility and personalized communication as a way of disconnecting from place, location and publics. The growing pervasiveness of location-aware technology urges us to rethink the intersection among location, mobile technologies and mobility. Di solito i luoghi scelti per un’analisi presentano qualche ragione intuitiva di interesse, una densità semantica che si impone e che chiede di essere descritta/spiegata attraverso la frequentazione e l’elaborazione di una sintesi concettuale. Nel caso di questo lungo viale romano, via Togliatti, il motivo di attrazione sta anzitutto nel nome, e cioè nella de- dica a uno storico dirigente del Partito Comunista Italiano cui è legata l’evocazione di un momento fondamentale dell’Italia del dopoguerra. Un altro tratto che si impone, questa volta alla vista, è rappresentato da una piantata di pini marittimi, divenuti alberi storici, lunga quasi dieci chilometri: un paesaggio “romano” davvero di impatto, che da Ponte Mammolo conduce lo sguardo sino agli archi dell’Acquedotto Alessandrino. Ma in questo caso “scendere in strada” e studiare i vari aspetti della sua vita diurna e notturna si rivela un’esperienza largamente disforica. Ne esce così l’articolato rapporto su una incompiutezza a più livelli che si traduce in incuria, inefficienza e illegalità, alle quali gli abitanti disillusi si adattano il più delle volte volgendo le spalle. E contemporaneamente emerge il senso urgente di una vasta impresa di rigenerazione e riscatto, che possa fare di questo vasto spazio un luogo “pieno”: vissuto, identitario, attrattivo ed esemplare nel senso migliore.
