This is a neutral and up-to-date review of a variety of Iranian issues--from democracy and freedom and their application in Iran, to the issue of legitimacy and Iran's regime ideology, to economic preference and support for terrorism. Important questions are raised about whether Iran is supporting international terrorism and if so, to what extent is it doing so. Issues of international and ethnonationalist terrorism, politics, and economics are discussed and analyzed in the context of the Middle East, Latin America, and Latin Europe. Using socioeconomic and political theory and personal anecdotes, this book delivers a fascinating insight into present-day Iran.

The shattering of the Islamic Republic’s legitimacy following the rigged presidential elections of June 2009 and the wave of protests that it provoked – dubbed the ‘Green Movement’ – triggered a process of radicalisation of the Iranian political regime. This radicalisation can be seen in the overall political project of total domination implemented in the 2010s, which no longer sought to win the support of an exasperated population, but to ‘contain’ it long enough to be able to systematically alienate the next generations, in the hope that these would be both numerous and devoted to the theocratic state. This new domestic policy also extends to the regional and international level, through the presence of Iranian or pro-Iranian military forces in neighbouring countries – a presence that has already triggered the escalation of extreme tensions in the region, thereby aggravating the antagonistic Iranian–American relationship. This power struggle between Iran and the United States risks dragging the Islamic Republic into a new conflict, not long after commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Iraq–Iran war (22 September 1980). This book was born out of the need to clarify the complex issue of the radicalisation of the Islamic Republic. To this end, the author examines the new domestic policy, shedding light on both the watershed of 2009 and the hegemonic regional ambition of the theocratic regime.

The volume examines the fluid boundaries of pre-modern identity in history and literature as well as the shaping of Iranian national identity in the 20th century.

Economic Welfare And Inequality In Iran written by Mohammad Reza Farzanegan and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-19 with Business & Economics categories.

This book examines economic inequality and social disparity in Iran, together with their drivers, over the past four decades. During this period, income distribution and economic welfare were affected by the 1979 Revolution, the eight-year war with Iraq, post-war privatization and economic liberalization initiatives carried out under the Rafsanjani and Khatami administrations, the ascendance of a populist economic platform under the Ahmadinejad administration, and the lifting of energy and financial sanctions under the Rouhani administration. Featuring a mix of scholars, including Iranian academics who experienced these changes and are publishing in English for the first time, this collection offers quantitative and descriptive studies of the country's post-revolutionary economic development and disparities. In most chapters, a hypothesis is developed from existing theories or observations, which is then tested using available data. This unique combination of new voices, academic as well as personal experiences, and scientific methods will be a valuable addition to the library of the scholars of modern Iran’s economy and society.

“Masterful . . . absorbing. This finely written book gives us a whole new sense of Iran.”—The Washington Post Book World While doing research in the Iranian village of Deh Koh, Erika Friedl was able to quietly observe and record the cloistered lives of women in one of the strictest of all Muslim societies. In this fascinating book, Friedl recounts these women’s personal stories as they relate the strain of their daily activities, their intricate relationships with men, and their hopes, dreams, and fears. Women of Deh Koh is a rare and vivid look at what life is really like for the women of Iran. “Her intimate understanding of the life and customs of the village has made her confident about conveying her view from the inside. To share this view with us, and to comment quietly and wisely on the scene, is the striking and illuminating achievement of Women of Deh Koh.”—The New York Times Book Review

Answering Only To God written by Geneive Abdo and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

“Riveting . . . a side of Iran that is often misrepresented by the world’s media—[an] insightful, captivating book.” —San Francisco Chronicle Taking the reader inside Iran’s key institutions, Geneive Abdo and Jonathan Lyons argue that the 1979 Iranian revolution, long viewed in the West as the pursuit of an imagined medieval Utopia, was in fact a political movement designed to modernize Islam. Twenty years later, a power struggle between conservative and reform elements provoked a clash that has destabilized the country and limited Iran’s ability to integrate with the world community. Answering Only to God challenges the prevailing Western belief that the Islamic world is an undifferentiated mass of disaffected and dangerous fanatics or that a Western-style democracy will soon transform this ancient land of Shi’ite and Sufi tradition. Instead, the authors explore the controversial view that beyond their quarrel with the West, stemming from decades of exploitive foreign policies, the real struggle in Iran is between reformers and conservative mullahs.

Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2014 Scores of books have been written by Western experts, mainly American, looking at the root causes of the conflict between Iran and the US. However, none of them have presented an inside look at this complex relationship from within the Iranian culture, society, and most importantly, the Iranian policy-making system. This gap has been the cause of misperceptions, misanalyses, and conflict, followed by the adoption of US policies that have failed to achieve their objectives. Seyed Hossein Mousavian worked for over 30 years on diplomatic efforts between Iran and the West, serving in numerous official posts, and as a confidante, colleague, and peer to many former and current high ranking Iranian officials, including now-President Hassan Rouhani and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. Here the former diplomat gives an insider's history of the troubled relationship between Iran and the US. His unique firsthand perspective blends memoir, analysis, and never before seen details of the many near misses in the quest for rapprochement. With so much at stake, the book concludes with a roadmap for peace that both nations so desperately need.

These essays examine Irans place in the world--its relations and cultural interactions with its immediate neighbors and with empires and superpowers from the beginning of the Safavid period in 1501 to the present day. The book provides important historical background on recent political and social developments in Iran and on its contemporary foreign relations. The topics explored include Iranian influence abroad on political organization, religion, literature, art, and diplomacy, as well as Iran's absorption of foreign influences in these areas. A special focus is the prevailing political culture of Iran throughout its early modern and contemporary periods. The authors combine approaches from history, political science, anthropology, international relations, and culturalstudies. Some essays address Irans interactions with various Arab and Turkic ethnicities in the region stretching from India to Egypt. Others examine its relations with the West during the Qajar and Pahlavi eras, women's issues, culture inside Iran during the Islamic Republic, and the Shi`ite theocracy of Iran as compared with other Muslim states.
