Observers of Iran have often ascribed the main cause of the revolution to economic problems under the Shah’s regime. This book, first published in 1990, on the other hand focuses on the political and social factors which contributed of the Pahlavi dynasty. Mehran Kamrava looks at the revolution in detail as a political phenomenon, making use of extensive interviews with former revolutionary leaders, cabinet ministers and diplomats to show the central role of the political collapse of the regime in bringing about the revolution. He concentrates on the internal and the international developments leading to this collapse, and the social environment in which the revolution’s leaders emerged.

From nuclear proliferation to support of international terrorism, to human rights abuses, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has made Iran the global menace that Iran is today. The IRGC is responsible for squashing democracy movements at home, for spreading the Iranian regime's revolutionary ideology abroad, and for sparking turmoil throughout the Middle East. Its forces operate independently of Iran's regular army. It answers directly only to one man, Iran's Supreme Leader. While most understand the role of the IRGC in fueling conflict throughout the region, its hidden grasp on the Iranian economy is just as important. Most of Iran's major businesses are nationalized and under the control of the IRGC. They have about 30 percent of the Iranian economy. The IRGC has been labeled Iran's "most powerful economic actor" by the U.S. Treasury Department, which has noted its deep reach into "critical sectors of Iran's economic infrastructure." The IRGC's biggest, largest entity is the construction arm which controls 800 affiliated companies. It controls billions of assets. The IRGC's business activities in turn fund Iran's ballistic missile program, its military activities, and its regional aggression.

Upheavals in the Middle East: The Theory and Practice of a Revolution engages with some of the most sensitive issues in the Middle East—revolutions and social protests. The book offers theoretical paradigms that suit the Middle East’s conditions—culturally, religiously and historically. It deals with seventeen case studies from a range of Muslim and Arab states and provides a theoretical framework to study other situations all over the world, including cases from the recent Arab Spring. Revolution, as political action, can occur in all societies, but in recent years it has appeared most frequently in the Middle East. Will this trend continue? What makes the Middle Eastern revolution unique and surprising? This book seeks to answer these questions, placing side by side those cases that were successful and those that were doomed to fail.

The Last Great Revolution written by Robin B. Wright and has been published by Knopf this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Current Events categories.

"The Last Great Revolution is written with clarity and insight about Iran's tumultuous twenty-year Islamic revolution. Robin Wright speaks authoritatively about the Iranian republic's evolution, from the convulsive, vindictive early years of he revolution to the current uncertainties over experimentation with Islamic democracy. Her book is a valuable contribtion to our understanding of contemporary Iranian society and the possible directions this very important country make take in the future." -- Senator Richard G. Lugar, Foreign Relations Committee Robin Wright, the acclaimed Mideast expert and foreign correspondent, returns to Iran, which she has visited more frequently than has any other American since the fall of the shah, to give us a portrait of the revolution -- a generation after Ayatollah Khomeini returned from exile to end 2,500 years of monarchy. She shows us how the Iranian revolution has taken on even greater importance since Khomeini's death, and how it transformed Iranian society as well as Islam. She describes the revolutions within the revolution that have resulted in a movement as radical in the world of Islam as Luther's Reformation was in the Christian world -- empowering women, modernizing social traditions, creating a fiesty, independent cinema and arts industry and giving birth to a new generation that is redefining Iran's political agenda. Wright makes abundantly clear why she believes the Iranian revolution will stand along with the French and the Russian as one of the three innovative revolutions -- and the last great revolution -- of the Modern Era.

Five years after the overthrow of the Pahlavi monarchy, Iran remains convulsed by political upheaval and embroiled in international conflict. Shock waves from the Iranian events have stirred unrest in the Middle East from Lebanon to Saudi Arabia, fed Islamic revivalism elsewhere in the Islamic world, and undermined the American position in this strategic region. Meanwhile, amid all this bewildering upheaval, the revolution has given birth to the modern world's first quasi-theocratic state run by orthodox clerics according to Islamic law. This book is a riveting analysis of the Iranian revolution, its economic, religious, and social turmoil, and its international consequences.
