Her sætter han nutidens hændelser i historisk kontekst -fra det fallerede iranske imperiums smertefulde møde med vesten i 1800-tallet til Mellemøstens første demokratiske omvæltning i 1905 efterfulgt af et diktatur med lynmodernisering på agendaen. Elling forklarer os, hvordan olien og et CIA-kup i 1951 ændrede Irans skæbne, hvordan den Kolde Krig gav shahen storhedsvanvid, og hvorfor en folkelig opstand i 1979 blev kuppet af et islamistisk diktatur. Men han forklarer også, hvorfor og hvordan iranerne fortsat kæmper for frihed, demokrati og dialog med Vesten. Således viser bogen, hvordan Iran trods revolution, otte års blodig krig med Irak, international isolation og et autoritært styre alligevel på forunderlig vis er et dynamisk land i rivende udvikling: Et samfund af 80 millioner iranere, størstedelen af dem unge, mange af dem ikke-religiøse og med millioner af højtuddannede kvinder, der under hverdagens slør er i gang med et stille, men sikkert oprør mod undertrykkende traditioner.
