The first annual conference of ICIS, the international congress of Irish studies, was held at, and academically sponsored by, the University of California at Berkeley in July 2012. The four main themes of the conference were: Performing Arts; Literature, Language, and Identity; Politics, Technology, and the Economy; and Issues of Intellectual Freedom. These proceedings of this highly successful event, in conjunction with the editor’s Ireland: a colony once again (CSP, 2012), attempt to explore the reinstatement of Irish identity in our present, vastly-changed political and cultural landscape.

The British State And The Northern Ireland Crisis 1969 73 written by William Beattie Smith and has been published by US Institute of Peace Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with History categories.

Focusing on four case studies, author William Beattie Smith traces the evolution of British policy from 1969-73 and depicts how easily a conflict over national identity can turn into bloodshed, grief, and horror; and how difficult it is once a serious fight has started to restore peace. In each of the case studies, Smith highlights a discrete policy followed by the British government in tackling political disorder in Northern Ireland, and examines why the policy was chosen or pursued. He outlines three broad strategic options reform, coercion, and powersharing and identifies factors influencing which of the three will be selected in practice. Focusing on policy outcomes rather than the details of the negotiating process, the author evaluates the relative importance of rational calculation, patterns of understanding, party politics, diplomatic pressures, organizational structure, and official doctrine in shaping policies and initiating radical changes. While rooted in policy analysis, the book ventures into the territory of political history and conflict studies. The author addresses issues such as the legitimacy of state authority, the vulnerability of democratic institutions to the opposition of disaffected minorities, and the tensions that exist between public order and individual rights. His conclusion derives strategic lessons from the British experience in Northern Ireland and provides guidance for policymakers confronting challenges arising from comparable cases."

March 2011: Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore have just formed a coalition government between Fine Gael and Labour. Ireland’s banks are broken, unemployment is heading for half a million, the public finances are in deficit, international lenders rate Ireland as ‘junk’ and the country is in an IMF bailout. As Tánaiste in the new Coalition, Eamon Gilmore was at the heart of every major economic decision taken during his term, and as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade was primarily responsible for restoring Ireland’s international reputation and trade connections. In his extraordinary political memoir of these dramatic and turbulent times, Eamon Gilmore writes frankly about the political price the Labour Party has paid for some of their choices, reflects on the circumstances that led to his own resignation and assesses the prospects for Ireland’s continued recovery, including the risks which could yet blow Ireland’s economy off course.

Dara O Briain When Fine Gael and Labour swept into government, in February 2011 they knew they were facing the greatest crisis in the history of the state. What confronted them was beyond their direst imaginings. Pat Leahy's The Price of Power is the riveting inside story of how they have led - and misled - Ireland. The Price of Power tells the story of trying to govern a country on the verge of ruin - the favours, the deals, the policy compromises and previously unthinkable choices that had to be made. It is a gripping tale of high drama (and high dudgeon), of betrayal, backstabbing and disillusionment, of those who rose to the challenge and those who withered under the strain. If there's one writer who can get the inside story on what's really going on at the higest levels in Irish poltiics, it's leading political journalist Pat Leahy. His account of Fianna Fáil in government, Showtime, is the considered the go-to book for anyone who wants to understand the disastrous politics led Ireland into economic meltdown. Now, with the same mix of unrivalled inside information, astute analysis and exciting writing, he lifts the lid on the coalition that is supposed to get us out of the fix.
