Excerpt from Ireland in Pre-Celtic Times Some will doubtless fall foul of me for my treatment of the place-names, which I have so far as possible endeavoured to print in their proper Celtic forms, in the hope of exposing a grave injury to historical and topographical science. Excerpt from Pre-Christian Ireland It is true that the connexion of Ireland in remote times with the East was pointed out by Dr. Keating, and by the annalists of ancient Eire, but the narrative in the stream of facts thus flowing down did not seem to fall in with the clear current of historic truth gathered together from other known sources of the world as a whole. Hence like many sons of Eire and others not Irish, but who have studied our early national history, he was obliged to look upon those early records as partly imaginative or mythic, with some groundwork of fact on which the edifice of fable and myth had been erected. Excerpt from The Celtic Church in Ireland: The Story of Ireland and Irish Christianity From Before the Time of St. Patrick to the Reformation The study of the organisation of the Celtic Church in Ireland has suffered greatly from having been pursued almost invariably in the light of modern Church systems, and with a constant effort to recon cile it with them. The effect has been to obscure or to keep out of sight its altogether unique features. If any justification is needed for another book on Irish history, the best apology the present writer can offer is that he has at least tried his utmost to regard and represent the facts with an unbiassed mind, and from an independent point of view. Excerpt from Ireland and the Celtic Church: A History of Ireland From St. Patrick to the English Conquest in 1172 I have often been asked to recommend a history of Ireland, embodying the result of the latest investigations, and telling a very chequered story in an interesting way. I have been unable to name any work fulfilling these conditions. Mr. Skene's learned volumes embody the result of modern investigations, but they deal as much with Scotland as with Ireland; while the older historians, such as Lanigan, King, and Todd, though very learned and accurate, are largely controversial and most certainly not light reading. I have endeavoured in the following pages to avoid controversy as far as possible, and have necessarily been obliged to make the story as interesting as I could. The form of the book explains the reason why. The lectures contained therein were originally delivered as public prelections in the Divinity-school of Trinity College. As Professor of Ecclesiastical History in the University of Dublin I am bound to lecture twice a week during two terms of the academic year, but no one is obliged to attend my classes. If I wish, there fore, to have an audience, I must attract one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Pagan Ireland, an Archaeological Sketch: A Handbook of Irish Pre-Christian Antiquities The descriptions which follow, of ancient re mains traceable to Pagan times, are derived from the accounts of various explorations and surveys made, in each branch, by competent arch&ologists, and are here reproduced - ih many instances in the very words of the writers. The Bibliography at the end of the volume comprises a list of upwards of one thousand papers and works, by about three hundred differ ent authors. Ah idea may be thus conveyed of the vast scaffolding erected for the building of a comprehensive guide to pre-christian archae ology. In such a plethora of literature the principal difficulty lay in selecting the best and most suitable material for the purpose. Excerpt from Five Years in Ireland 1895-1900 The popularity enjoyed by Five Years in Ireland is, perhaps, more conclusively proved by the many requests received for a cheap edition than by any other circumstance. The difficulties under which the work was originally published, its bulk, and the number of illustrations, involved so much outlay that it has been impossible, hitherto, to meet the wishes of those who found a seven-and-sixpenny edition beyond their reach. Now, however, in order to forward the good cause which I have at heart, this edition has been produced at the popular price of three-and-sixpence nett, containing thirty-one pages of illustration, and printed from the same plates used in the dearer editions. Author's Note The persons whose portraits appear in "Five Years in Ireland" have no responsibility whatever for the Author's opinions. The portraits are inserted solely, as part of the Historical section of the work. They are pictorial facts, and have no connection with the Opinionative part of the book.
