In 1869, Tom Walsh and his young sister are forced to emigrate from Ireland to America. Tom vows to make his fortune before ever returning to his homeland. He sets his sights on Colorado---and gold. Eventually, after much struggle and suffering, Tom strikes one of the biggest lodes of gold in American mining history. His mine produces $5,000 of gold bullion a day, and thirty years after emigrating, Tom is one of the world's richest men. A friend of presidents and royalty, the American commissioner to the 1900 World Fair, and a lavish host in one of Washington D.C.'s most stunning mansions, he still returns to visit Ireland in homage to his past. Fortune, however, has her price. Tom's strong-willed, beloved daughter, Evalyn's life is as marred by tragedy as it was by riches. Wife of the heir to the Washington Post, Evalyn persuades her father to buy her the notorious Hope Diamond---rumored to be cursed by the Indian goddess, Sita. It is then that Tom and Evalyn learn that tragedy and sorrow serve a master far greater than money or stature. In this extraordinary novel, Irish bestselling author Mary Ryan has brought to life the lives of these two remarkable people, and the bygone worlds that surround them, with stunning detail. A captivating story of the American dream, from the Western prairies to the high society of the capitol, Hope is filled with misfortune and heartache, great love and financial ruin. Based on a true story, Hope is a haunting, extraordinary saga of impressive intensity.

#1 Irish Times Bestseller! A modern travel tale—part personal pilgrimage, part political quest—that captures the power of human resilience "McKiernan sticks his thumb out, and somehow a healthy dose of humanity manages to roll up alongside him. . . . This book is a paean to nuance, decency and possibility."—Colum McCann, National Book Award winner and New York Times bestselling author of Let the Great World Spin and Apeirogon. Following the collapse of Ireland’s Celtic Tiger economy, social activist Ruairí McKiernan questions whether he should join the mounting number of emigrants searching for greater opportunity elsewhere. McKiernan embarks on a hitchhiking odyssey with no money, no itinerary and no idea where he might end up each night. His mission: to give voice to those emerging from one of the most painful periods of economic and social turmoil in Ireland’s history. Engaging, provocative and sincere, Hitching for Hope is a testimony to the spirit of Ireland. It is an inspirational manifesto for hope and healing in troubled times.

A sparkling memoir and a remarkable personal account of the emigrant lives of one Irish couple among the hundreds of thousands forced to emigrate in the 1950s. Centred on Lily O'Connor's life with Paddy in Dublin, Luton and Geelong, it is the story of a man who always wanted too much and a woman whose resilience saw her coping courageously, often on her own, with a large family in difficult circumstances. Shades of Angela's Ashes and Don't Wake Me At Doyles, this is ultimately an upbeat story told by a feisty, indomitable woman.

Not illustrated. 1849 edition. Excerpt: ... My Dear Friend, You tell me that the people of England are nauseated with the subject of Ireland; and you wonder why I, an Englishman, devote so much time and pains to Irish work and Irish people. The state of mind which prompts these remarks is, I fear, very common at this moment; but I believe it to be not only founded in an erroneous view of the subject, but also one great cause which aggravates the condition of Ireland, and operates as the great impediment to such active exertions, in a right direction, as might bring Ireland out of the present crisis in a regenerated state. Every one of the subjects which have the effect of disgusting the English mind, and exasperating the English feeling with respect to Ireland, ought to lead us to an inference that would prompt to exertion for the application of a remedy adequate to the occasion; and for which Ireland has been providentially prepared in a manner, the details of which can hardly fail to strike the mind with surprise when they are known. The providence of God has placed me in circumstances by which I have been made acquainted with very much more of that detail than is generally known in Ireland; B while in England it is absolutely unknown. It is the possession of this knowledge, gradually conveyed to me by providential openings, that has made it a matter of duty (as I conscientiously feel) to act, as others who have not this knowledge cannot be expected to act. I feel that to be acquainted with the reality of the condition of the Irish Romanists at this moment, must prompt to activity in taking advantage of manifest openings for their benefit and God's glory; and therefore I have resolved to make public much of the knowledge that I possess, together with such evidence of its truth, ...

In 1970, a group of people had what many commentators felt was a ludicrous dream, that politics in Northern Ireland 'should not be dominated by division, but should be about co-operation, partnership and reconciliation. This dream was to become the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland. In the years since, this ambition to overcome tribal politics for a greater good has been preserved, through good times and bad. This book, the first full record of the development of the Alliance Party, charts that journey of hope and of history.
