Introduction To Biometrics written by Anil K. Jain and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-29 with Computers categories.
This textbook introduces the fundamental concepts and techniques used in biometric recognition to students, practitioners, and non-experts in the field. Specifically, the book describes key methodologies used for sensing, feature extraction, and matching of commonly used biometric modalities such as fingerprint, face, iris, and voice. In addition, it presents techniques for fusion of biometric information to meet stringent accuracy requirements, also discussing various security issues and associated remedies involved in the deployment of biometric systems. Furthermore, this second edition captures the progress made in the field of biometric recognition, with highlights including: Lucid explanation of core biometric concepts (e.g., individuality and persistence), which builds a strong foundation for more in-depth study and research on biometrics A new chapter on deep neural networks that provides a primer to recent advancements in machine learning and computer vision Illustrative examples of how deep neural network models have contributed to the rapid evolution of biometrics in areas such as robust feature representation and synthetic biometric data generation A new chapter on speaker recognition, which introduces the readers to person recognition based on the human voice characteristics Presentation of emerging security threats such as deepfakes and adversarial attacks and sophisticated countermeasures such as presentation attack detection and template security While this textbook has been designed for senior undergraduate students and first-year graduate students studying a course on biometrics, it is also a useful reference guide for biometric system designers, developers, and integrators.

Iris recognition is one of the highest accuracy techniques used in biometric systems. The accuracy of the iris recognition system is measured by False Reject Rate (FRR), which measures the authenticity of a user who is incorrectly rejected by the system due to changes in iris features (such as aging and health condition) and external factors that affect iris image, for instance, high noise rate. External factors such as technical fault, occlusion, and source of lighting that causes the image acquisition to produce distorted iris images create error, hence are incorrectly rejected by the biometric system. FRR can be reduced using wavelets and Gabor filters, cascaded classifiers, ordinal measures, multiple biometric modalities, and a selection of unique iris features. Nonetheless, in the long duration of the matching process, existing methods were unable to identify the authenticity of the user since the iris structure itself produces a template changed due to aging. In fact, the iris consists of unique features such as crypts, furrows, collarette, pigment blotches, freckles, and pupils that are distinguishable among humans. Earlier research was done by selecting unique iris features. However, these had low accuracy levels. A new way of identifying and matching the iris template using the nature-inspired algorithm is described in this book. It provides an overview of iris recognition that is based on nature-inspired environment technology. The book is useful for students from universities, polytechnics, community colleges; practitioners; and industry practitioners.

Cyberspace security is a critical subject of our times. On one hand the development of Internet, mobile communications, distributed computing, computer software and databases storing essential enterprise information has helped to conduct business and personal communication between individual people. On the other hand it has created many opportunities for abuse, fraud and expensive damage. This book is a selection of the best papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop dealing with the Subject of Cyberspace Security and Defense. The level of the individual contributions in the volume is advanced and suitable for senior and graduate students, researchers and technologists who wish to get some feeling of the state of the art in several sub-disciplines of Cyberspace security. Several papers provide a broad-brush description of national security issues and brief summaries of technology states. These papers can be read and appreciated by technically enlightened managers and executives who want to understand security issues and approaches to technical solutions. An important question of our times is not "Should we do something for enhancing our digital assets security", the question is "How to do it".
