Excerpt from Iris for Every Purpose The lris is a magnificent and most satisfactory hardy perennial as it requires no special care and will grow in practically any soil; it will withstand extreme heat or cold and drought. It will flower over a long period of time, multiply rapidly and the first cost is nominal. Such a combination of virtues is difficult to surpass. The modern lrises are the aristocrats of the Flag family, but many people do not realize the remarkable development and improvement that has been made in recent years. Their possibilities in landscape effects are far-reaching so each season their popularity increases. By careful selection of varieties you may have blooms from the first warm days of early spring until mid-summer. Excerpt from The Book of the Iris This work has been written with two principal aims in view. I have endeavoured, in the first place, to give all the useful information upon culture that is available, and, secondly, to provide an easy and efficient means for the verification of names and for the naming of plants. In the verification of names that happen to be correct there Should be no difficulty, but with regard to the naming of plants, it must be remembered that Irises are exceedingly variable. They hybridise both in the garden and in a wild state, and intermediates, or forms not agreeing precisely with any description, are at least liable to be met with. I still hope, however, that naming will be effected in most cases without difficulty. By dividing into small, easily understood groups, and by the construction of keys, I have hoped to provide a special facility. Excerpt from Iris, 1927 Mixtures. 100 for If wanted in quanti ties for mass planting, we can give special prices in named varieties during the summer months. Seedlings. We are growing seedlings from hand pollinated seed of the finest varieties. Only one white variety has been named but a number are under observation, and have been sent to the New York Trial Gardens. Next year the best of these will be distributed. But wehave a great many that are not sufficiently distinct to receive a name and these will be sold at per 100 for those of medium height and per 100 for the taller varieties, 50 or more at the 100 rate. The latter varieties are over 3 feet in height, with branching stem and large flowers. Some have lovely pastel shades and every one is different. We are looking forward to a season of pleasant surprises, as some seedlings blooming for the first time last spring showed a decided improvement in the white and pink tones, and in some bronzy shades. It will take another season of bloom to determine their fitness to be kept. There is nothing so thrilling as walking down a seedling row, studying each new blossom that has. Opened over night and hunting for finer flowers or new colorings. Rating. In a Symposium for 1922, a jury of competent and experienced iris growers placed a rating on most of the iris in general commerce. It proved helpful in many ways, but was not quite complete on many points. For instance, an iris rated at 90 or over might have a very beautiful and large flower, with tall and branching stems, but it increases slowly, or is a shy bloomer, and its value is only for the exhibitor or fancier. Another variety is rated at but a patch of it in the garden is a joy to behold. There are iris for all purposes, and the average person wades through seas of description and tries to find the iris suitable for his or her purpose. An exhibition iris is not always suitable for color effects in the garden. We have a number that answer both requirements and you will find them so marked. So We have not given the A. I. S. Ratings, which other catalogues will show, but one we have worked out in collaboration with Mrs. Silas B. Waters, who has a large collection, and is an acknowledged authority on iris. This rating is based on the good and bad points of the flower and plant as we know it, and represented by cer tain letters and numbers. We did not feel quali fied to pass judgment on some varieties this year, until they have been studied more carefully. This is by no means a perfect rating, but we believe it will prove helpful to other lovers of the iris. We would appreciate very much any comments as to this method of judging, as it will prove helpful in future observation. Excerpt from New, Rare and Good Old Irises, 1928 I have given the descriptions of varieties as I have seen them grow in my own garden over a period of years or since their introduction. The color descriptions are based on Ridgeway's Color Standards, in so far as practicable, together with the general color effect in most cases, for ease of interpretation. The height in inches and season of bloom from very early (v. E.) to very late which follow my own ratings, are based on an average of seasons, locations, and soil types. The name of the introducer with date of introduction, and awards at national or similar exhibitions are given following the name of the variety. The rating of the Symposium Committee of the American Iris Society is the figures which immediately follows the name of the variety. Since many varieties have not been rated, I am giving in addition my personal comparative estimation of the different varieties, both for exhibition (e.) and landscape or garden (g.) uses. These ratings are based upon experience of growing the different varieties side by side and a study of the different factors, including growth, effectiveness, poise, height, color, form, size, substance, and distinctive qualities, all of which go to make up a perfect iris for both exhibition and garden purposes. The ratings on the more recent introductions are subject to revision as further experience may bring out their fa'ults, if any, or further demonstrate their superior qualities. I have hesitated to publish these ratings because personal likes and dislikes do enter into such considerations. I have endeavored, however, to deal frankly and accurately with the diflerent varieties and having been urged to publish them hope the suggestions may be helpful, especially to those who may be interested in the new and untried introductions. The reader may ask why an old iris such as Iris King has been placed with the best and most outstanding varieties, while such fine varieties as Hyperion with a higher rating are excluded. The reason is that while Hyperion is a finer individual iris than Iris King in size, form, and height, there are some even better varieties of very similar coloring, while Iris King is still one of the best in its particular color and is, therefore, given the preference in this list. Undoubtedly, some of the newer varieties may demonstrate their superior qualities to such an extent that they may displace some that now seem to be among the best. I welcome suggestions and criticism on these points based upon the experience of others in different locations. Excerpt from Iris Catalog Bearded Irises may be planted successfully at any time when the ground is tillable, even when in full bloom, if moisture is supplied until the root - growth becomes established. The rest period just after the flowering season - during July and August in this climate - is the ideal time for transplanting. That is when we make our own plantings and when we prefer to ship Irises to our customers. Irises are shipped dry and should be planted as soon as received. Our plants will come with the tops properly trimmed and the roots pruned back ready. For planting. Should they be received with the tops dried out and the roots more or less shriveled, so much the better because that indicates that the rhizomes are in their dormant State. Plant shallow so the rhizome, or fleshy part of the roor, lays in horizontal position and is barely covered. Press the soil firmly about the roots so that the rhizome is anchored securely in the earth and not rocked by the wind. Do not water unless the soil is very dry, and then only to settle the soil about the r00ts. Keep the plantings free from weeds by frequent but shallow cultivation, and do not allow them to become overgrown by Other plants in a way to shade the rhizomes and cut off the air. Let the sun bake the rhizomes! Set the roots about a foor apart in rows or in clumps, and transplant when they become crowded, about every third year. Special consideration must be given to the Bearded Irises of Ricardi parentage mentioned in this list. These are mostly introductions from Denis and Millet, and include some of the most beautiful Bearded varieties, well worth the special attention necessary for their successful growth. Like the parent species, they are all Strong, robust growers under favorable conditions, and produce flowers of magnificent coloring on tall, rigid stems. They are, however, somewhat difficult to handle in the colder climates unless their requirements are well understood. They withstand the cold of winter quite well, but they are highly susceptible to the dampness of early spring. They should be planted in a dry and warm location where the under drainage is perfect, and given slight protection in the late winter by covering with a frame that will protect them from the wet and yet admit free circulation of air. Our descriptive texts indicate the varieties that need such special care. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
