Examining the various types of building in both the North and South of Ireland, in towns villages and the countryside, this work aims to help readers to identify buildings and establish their history and purpose. Buildings are therefore identified by type, location and function. The focus is on the small everyday buildings of Ireland - dwellings, workplaces, churches, schools and other local symbols of administration and institution. Great works of architecture, the large country house and the monumental architecture of the city have been omitted, except where they are used to illustrate historical development.

Irelands landscape is dotted with remains of medieval buildings, most of them in ruins. As works of architecture, these buildings have very specific stories to tell about the people who built them and about the societies in which they functioned, but it is hard for historians to hear those stories without some knowledge of architecture. This guide seeks to provide historians with the knowledge they need to tap into this great reservoir of information. It reviews the different types of medieval building that one encounters in Ireland, discusses their measurements, materials and construction techniques, explains their functions, and provides a checklist of datable features and includes a guide to recording buildings.

The subject matter of this study -- the fate of vernacular Irish cottages -- although essentially regional in emphasis (north Donegal) -- is, in the authors' opinion, a matter of national concern, if not scandal. Large numbers of these former 'jewels' of the Irish countryside are disappearing yearly; so that now few exist even as ruins. Sadly, in some cases misguided planning policies of local authorities and past lack of any conservation provisions has hastened their demise, particularly with the controversial advent of 'bungalow' bliss' and one-off building in the Irish countryside, which is in effect, the other side of the coin. In an ideal world, this profusely illustrated study should have been done at least twenty years ago to record what in such a short time has now been lost for ever. For it is unlikely that the time-consuming structural methods of the past -- and the mining and preparation of local materials such as flags and slates -- will ever come about again; so that, for example, a slate roof deliberately removed or collapsed from neglect is a roof most likely gone for ever. The Irish countryside is undoubtedly the worse for this process;and in time, if not already, it will in the authors' view impinge adversely on the tourist industry -- the 'Irish cottage' featuring in the famous John Hinde photographs now being very hard to find in the rural parts of Ireland. It is, therefore, the aim of this small study to tell, with photographic evidence, a tale which could be replicated in any part of the Atlantic fringe of Ireland, recording before it is finally lost what little remains of this important part of Irish tradition. Hopefully in so doing it may prick the consciences of officialdom and others to act to save this vital part of Irish heritage.

Lush and green, the beauty of Ireland's landscape is legendary. "The Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape" has harnessed the expertise of dozens of specialists to produce an exciting and pioneering study which aims to increase understanding and appreciation for the landscape as an important element of Irish national heritage, and to provide a much needed basis for an understanding of landscape conservation and planning. Essentially cartographic in approach, the Atlas is supplemented by diagrams, photographs, paintings, and explanatory text. Regional case studies, covering the whole of Ireland from north to south, are included, along with historical background. The impact of human civilization upon Ireland's geography and environment is well documented, and the contributors to the Atlas deal with contemporary changes in the landscape resulting from developments in Irish agriculture, forestry, bog exploitation, tourism, housing, urban expansion, and other forces. "The Atlas of the Rural Irish Landscape" is a book which aims to educate and inform the general reader and student about the relationship between human activity and the landscape. It is a richly illustrated, beautifully written, and immensely authoritative work that will be the guide to Ireland's geography for many years to come.
