Excerpt from Irish Gardening, Vol. 4 By P. J. Gray, Horticultural Instructor, Schools of Domestic Economy. N many parts of the country, and especially in the I west, there is still great room for improvement in the keeping of cottage gardens. Some of the people are Slow to appreciate the benefits to be derived from the growing ofa variety of vegetables, and well cropped gardens in this respect are more the exception than the rule. The cottager Should aim at making the most of his garden, and this can only be accomplished by keeping it well cropped, not allowing any of it to remain idle during the season, and growing a variety of vegetables. Many of the county councils now give prizes for well kept cottage gardens, and all cottagers should be ambitious to gain a prize. The growing of a variety of vegetables does not mean that each of them should have an equal portion of the garden a small plot or bed of each is sufficient, and early potatoes, fruit trees, &c., may be grown in quantity. Excerpt from Irish Gardening, Vol. 17: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Advancement of Horticulture and Arboriculture in Ireland, January, 1922 We have said little with regard to actual culture of these deservedly popular owering plants, as it is hardly necessary to' do so when it is well known that they will succeed in fairly good garden soil, and often may be seen growing in gardens in the very heart of a city where soil is not over burdened with richness. To the professional gardener who appreciates them fully, they supply him with sheaves of white blossoms in the early year by potting up the clumps in autumn and growing them on in cold frames until the roots have well advanced, to bring the plants into warmth, and gentle forcing and moisture does the rest. Amateur gardeners recognise the value of Campanulas as hardy border owering plants; and most of them are content with this. To try them as indoor plants in the manner outlined is all that is needed for anyone to appreciate them more. Fully.
