Excerpt from Iroquois Folk Lore, Gathered From the Six Nations of New York At the request of this Association, now sixty years old, I select for my last publication some things from my large collection of Iroquois folk lore which may interest some, and which comes from many sources. As a charter member of the American Folk Lore Society in 1888, I had two papers in its first volume, and con tinned this for many years, Indian themes being in de mand. My first important pubic work of this kind was of a material nature, gradually approaching my present theme. Mr. Arthur C. Parker, my successor, went farther in this, and I have freely quoted from his admirable publications. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Oneida Iroquois Folklore Myth And History written by Anthony Wonderley and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-12-01 with History categories.

This is the first major book to explore uniquely Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and specifically Oneida, components in the Native American oral narrative as it existed around 1900. Drawn largely from early twentieth-century journals by non-Indigenous scholar Hope Emily Allen, much of which was published in Oneida Iroquois Folklore, Myth, and History for the first time. Even as he studies time-honored themes and such stories as the Haudenosaunee account of creation, Anthony Wonderley breaks new ground examining links between legend, history, and everyday life. He pointedly questions how oral traditions are born and develop. Uncovering tales told over the course of 400 years, Wonderley further defines and considers endurance and sequence in oral narratives. Finally, possible links between Oneida folklore and material culture are explored in discussions of craft works and archaeological artifacts of cultural and symbolic importance. Arguably the most complete study of its kind, the book will appeal to a wide range of professional disciplines from anthropology, history, and folklore to religion and Native American studies.

An easy-to-use guide to American regional folklore with advice on conducting research, regional essays, and a selective annotated bibliography. American Regional Folklore begins with a chapter on library research, including how to locate a library suitable for folklore research, how to understand a library's resources, and how to construct a research strategy. Mood also gives excellent advice on researching beyond the library: locating and using community resources like historical societies, museums, fairs and festivals, storytelling groups, local colleges, newspapers and magazines, and individuals with knowledge of the field. The rest of the book is divided into eight sections, each one highlighting a separate region (the Northeast, the South and Southern Highlands, the Midwest, the Southwest, the West, the Northwest, Alaska, and Hawaii). Each regional section contains a useful overview essay, written by an expert on the folklore of that particular region, followed by a selective, annotated bibliography of books and a directory of related resources.

Originally published in 1964 by the Smithsonian Institution’s Bureau of American Ethnology, this book is a compilation of the ethnographic data on the seventeenth-century Huron Indians contained in The Jesuit Relations and in the writings of Samuel de Champlain and Gabriel Sagard. This study of the Hurons, who lived in the present province of Ontario, Canada, spans the period from 1615 to 1649, when they were defeated and dispersed by the Iroquois. Topics covered include dress, modes of travel, trade, war, sociopolitical organization, subsistence activities, and religious beliefs and practices. The book is invaluable for indicating the cultural similarities and differences between the Hurons and the neighboring Northern Iroquoian cultures and for documenting evidence of cultural change. This first paperback edition also includes a new introduction by the author, in which she brings her work up to date by surveying developments in the study of the Huron ethnography between 1964 and the present.
